Oh No, a worse gearbox leak!

Replacing the transmission after an engine rebuild, I checked with various online posts / specialists / oil sellers and eventually settled on Millers CRX 75w 90NT+ Competition Transmission Oil.
The shift was definitely better, although there is still a bit of searching around for 3rd/4th sometimes.
However, after only a couple of hundred miles I have noticed that what had been only an occasional drip from the 'box ( I had replaced all the seals during the engine rebuild) thinking that that was likely to be the source of any leakage, I now have a drip or two every day, and it occurred to me that this thin oil itself might be able to seep through the casings? It doesn't appear to be from any of the seals, although it is not too easy to see

If you lay a sheet of white paper under the box and then when it's leaked you should be able to examine the box with a torch to find the source. Main culprits are drive shaft seals....

As "Triton" says - white paper is your friend.
I replaced all seals on my transaxle rebuild also - except one - guess which one is leaking......
Mine is leaking from the O Ring seal on shaft of the reverse/5th gear external cam - and probably because the bush is worn.
Check that area also - assuming you are running a 5 speed box.

A drip or two a day is not much really.  Check your level regularly until you get a handle on how often it will need a top up.  Then live with it.

I think I've found one source, it's the speedo drive.
Any suggestions as to what might seal this? Some sort of silicone, after it's been cleaned thoroughly?

Jack up the rear, remove the speedo drive, clean thoroughly, fit new seal and o-ring.  You can augment with a gear-oil compatible sealant like gear-oil proof silicone sealer (not the regular stuff meant for engine oil), blue hylomar, or Permatex aviation form-a-gasket #3.  Use sparingly as it will make future removal more difficult.

Forgive me for whipping a dead horse, but I would like to hear the definitive choices for the three sel areas of the damndable yoke/axle leak.  Here is what I've heard so far;


A.    "lite grease"

B.    "Lite grease"

C.    Locktite 580

D.    "Flexible Sealant"

I have the Locktite 580 but could you guys please help me out with more specific suggestions for US/Canadian available goops?

I thought Hylomar was used somewhere. Maybe that’s the flexible sealant

Locktite 580 is a locking compound. I'd give that a very wide berth if planning on getting the side nuts off at some future date.
You want something 'cloggy' but not 'grippy'.
I recall using Hylomar. Sealing the side nuts isn't the difficult part of this job.

I used a non-hardening sealer on A, B, and C.  Do not use flexible sealer on the output shaft splines (D).  Examples of non-hardening sealer would be:

- Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket #3

- "blue" Hylomar.

I have no drips.
