Temps were bit nicer today up here in MA...so, installed a braced shelf for an on-the-road toolbox and supplies (never know, right?) and polished the alternator and carb domes. 

This was originally installed by a PO to relocate the battery. I think it was because they misplaced the hold-down clamp; the battery was just bungee-cord mounted in the box. I relocated the battery back where it belonged, built a new clamp and had taken this out. It was on my list to put back in someday. Today was someday.  Figure it will be good to carry more than just the tool roll…maybe a ratchet set, open ends, couple screwdrivers, multimeter…and spare quart of oil and brake fluid?

Painted the front crossover (they're just for show...) of the pair to match the rear one. Now thinking when I put the fresh O/H and polished carbs on, that the secondary throttle assembly (which is just a mount…throttle are removed, holes plugged, really just a mount for the carb adapters and to get right intake length) should be shot with silver too…

Too much?

Oh, and trying to figure out where to mount the air/oil separator when I put the breather fitting in the front of the valve cover and “y” the existing one in.   Not much wasted room in here.

Queued up for next week:  Remove the tubular header and cross-pipe, paint the muffler with high-temp enamel, reinstall refreshed cast manifold and cross-pipe with new gaskets and reuse those stainless clamps that you see in the second photo.  They work a treat, don't crimp the pipes like U-bolts, and give a gas-tight seal (especially if you smear a little exhaust pipe compound at the transition at the joint.)

It does look great! I’m a little surprised that you kept the crossover pipes and the catch tank. You don’t see many with them.

It does look great! I’m a little surprised that you kept the crossover pipes and the catch tank. You don’t see many with them.

Well...to be honest, all the bits came with the car, and while I appreciate the 'lightness' meme with these things...I wanted to return, at least appearance wise, to as close to stock as it would have been pushed out the door in Hethel and leaked its first oil around the test track.

All the systems are disabled/plugged (except for the catch tank; it is plumbed in to the necks of the fuel fillers.), so the accommodations for tuninig/mixture/etc have been factored in to get the car to run pretty well.  If it at least looks close to stock...then when I pop the boot...oil leaks and all....someone will say the same thing!

  I'm beginning to believe these oil weep stories more and more. Not so much the engine but that dang gearbox never stops.

Thanks! 

The engine is doing its best to weep around the rear of the head gasket.  Keeping the block well coated.  I wash it down regularly with gunk.  That and those infernal seals on the valve cover gasket studs.  I got most of them, just need to do the front 2 on the driver side.  I got one size smaller seals, and smear a little red RTV into the base of the stud where it comes thru the cover, put the seal on, washer, and torque down.  Replaced the oil filler with the expoxied-on filler cap adapter from Ray.  No leaks from the gasket; did the aviation gasket sealer on both sides when I replaced that problematic joint back in '22.  Hoping the new head gasket, etc. will solve the weeping engine.  Did the drain tube a couple years ago (had 2 in OEM bags; they're a bit more flexible than the pattern parts that are sold today) with RTV around the male parts of the tube, massaged it in with a flat putty knife after soaking in boiling water for 10 minutes, then once in place, twisted it around to fully distribute the RTV around the joint.  It's dry for now.  Saving the last OEM drain tube to replace when I pull the head.

I know I'm going to regret saying this...but my output seals are dry, just a weep from the rear shift seal.  Have a new one, just haven't gotten a Round Tuit yet.
