1974 TCS for sale on BaT
« on: Saturday,June 07, 2025, 05:50:22 PM »
Pretty much original black ‘74 TCS for sale (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1974-lotus-europa-twin-cam-special-6/). Pretty nice car. The paint is a bit sad. The front brakes are supposed to be boosted (but the rears are not?). I really like the treatment for the seats. It comes with both a 4 and a 5 speed.

Some interesting points both good and not so much about this car. It’s titled as a 1974 but was built in July of ’73. So was it a late ’73 or a very early ’74? I suspect, as has been the case with many cars, that it was sold in 1974 and therefore is titled as such. I’ve learned the map pocket and dual rear deck gas struts were a late 1974 addition but I thought all 1974’s had the cloth seat inserts. This car originally had the standard vinyl covered seat pad, back and door card inserts as they are included in the left over parts. I agree the tan cloth with the LOTUS script is a nice touch.
I was wondering if there was something wrong with the four speed trans that led to switching to the five speed? jbcollier points out that the extra trans is a five speed and then JPSO86 states that the trans in the car is also a five speed. So I guess if they are both five speeds the one out of the car is broken in some way.
It has, (I assume aftermarket) adjustable rear lower links. But I agree, the power front brake statement seems very odd. This is the second Europa I’ve seen in the last couple of months where the owner has switch to a remote reservoir master. At least this one is in what I’d consider the best location. The other car owner put his in the frunk. Being plastic I‘d be afraid of some item in the frunk bouncing around and punching a hole in it.
I’m always surprised as well as suspicious when an owner/seller (who obviously is wanting top dollar) fails to do his due diligence to provide the most information and best photos. Especially things like the front “T” section of the chassis. Or not providing a letter from Lotus that gives the basic information as to what the car was when it left the factory. It’s not that hard to do!
I found the car on the old Lotus Europa Registry. There it states it was bought off of eBay in 2005 by the 2nd owner in Alberta and it had been in storage for 15 years.
Front tires date code 2013 and rears are 2005. Like I said, some good, some not so much.
I've been trying to tee up a meeting with this one Europa owner so the wife can try it on for size. She's not sure she'll still be able to get in and out of one. He keeps putting me off because he keeps finding new things to fix. I'd have made him an offer by now but I have to wait on the "fitting". So as much as I'm interested in this car I have my eye on another.

This car was manufactured in July '73 (from the description and "chassis tag") so it's a bit early for the map pocket and cloth seat inserts. It does have it's own cloth seat inserts which I think are very nice! The dash is in good shape which is nice also.

The lack of frame detail, brake and booster detail, and cold start and driving videos are disappointing. Hopefully the seller will add them.

The info about the trannies is confusing but while I know some people prefer 4 speeds (especially if they do most of their driving in town), I don't see the downside to having two 5 speeds (presuming both work!).

Current bid $6,107 with 4 days to go. No bids in 2 days - not good sign, it would have to have a flurry of activity to reach anything more than a "project" price. are there questions, yes are pictures and description lacking, yes - but I have seen worse sell for some big money.

Yeah, it's not a great example given the poor paint condition but it seems to be a sold car. I would have expected a higher bid by now. The catch is that there are some significant gaps in the description and pictures (cold start and driving video, under side pictures, what's the deal with the brakes...). Still, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of interest in the car though. I think the lack of any videos is a drag on it.

The fact it is in Canada is a major factor.  It is a fairly simple process to bring a car across the border but US buyers are always gun shy.  A real opportunity to buy a very good driver for a good price.  Most of the listing issues are on the lister.  He is not the seller, doesn't know the car that well, and is an inexperienced seller.

1 day to go, only 5 bids, current bid $6107 from 5 days ago - car deserves better, it is not a no reserve car so I doubt this will sell.

I also think this will not meet reserve. Because neither the owner nor seller is well versed I’m afraid they will have priced it too high. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to like about this car. It’s just that in reality there is a lot that needs doing. Anything made of rubber is suspect. The front tires are 13 and rears 20 years old so they have to go. All hoses and bushings etcetera will need to be done and for me, sooner rather than later. I realize that transport costs to get it from Alberta to the new owner as well as any duties and/or taxes shouldn’t affect the price but let’s be real, eh! I know if it was me I’d be working all fees into my budget and the more fees I pay the lower my top bid will be.
And don’t get me started on Ontario’s new “Drive On” automobile safety certification program and the added costs there!

If you picked "not making the reserve" you win! It was bid to $14,000. I thought it should have gone to at least $15,000. The paint wasn't good but everything else seemed to be in order and I liked the seat treatment. Maybe one of the bidders will make a deal with him.
