Pickling engines for storage
« on: Sunday,May 25, 2025, 05:30:45 PM »
There has been some discussion about freeing up seized engines after being stored in a dry area over a few months. I have been in aircraft maintenance for over 45 years and trained at Pratt and Whitney, Boeing, Airbus , GE and Rolls Royce . Okay not Renault but airlines take meticulous care of engines are protected during storage.
I'm not going into detail about how, when and how when a google search is out there.
Fill your engine with lubricant, PLEASE.
I saved a few parts from an engine that was stored outside for many years and is now junk. Imagine if the owner filled the engine with some diesel fuel or light oil. Why bother saving an item if it's not usable to someone else's down the road. The ultrasonic cleaner below has cleaned up some of my head parts showing that they are all garbage, rotted out by air.
If it's not running, please dump some oil inside it until full.

I think you make good points, Dave.  The big issue is that rarely do people plan that they're putting aware a car for years.  Most figure they'll be back working on it next week...which then turns into a month, then a year, and so it goes.  But you're still right.

They say , " An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

My intent of starting this thread is to persevere the work that was put into these, weather by the owner or a shop. I understand the situation where it will be used or I'll get to it next  week, month.
The parts I just cleaned with the ultrasonic cleaner are all not suitable for an engine now. The entire engine is mostly scrap metal. Some bolts may be unscathed and usable.
