Turn signal wiring
« on: Wednesday,September 01, 2021, 07:55:30 AM »
Ok,maybe a stupid question. The turn signal indicator in the dash of a TC is common to both sides. In a TCS each side has its own warning light so the wiring is simple. On a TC the warning light appears to ground through the opposite side light. How can this happen without the opposite light also illuminating? Example, signal left, left signals illuminate but warning light grounds through right lights so why don’t right lights also illuminate.

The indicator bulb acts as a "choke" or "dam" only allowing a small amount of current through, which is not enough to light the other side's bulbs.  Resistance through the other side's bulbs is relatively low providing an adequate ground path for the small amount of current being used.

Bruce , some say the only  stupid question is the one you don't ask!
JB gave you the answer, all I'll say is that many British  cars of the era were the same.

Got it,thanks. Enough juice to power the warning light but not the larger signal bulb.  Thanks JB  and glad to see you are checking up on me Roger. Got a whole loom from a scrap Europa last week so I now have plenty of spare wire of the correct colours. ( spelt correctly ,it’s a English loom )
