Title: S2 chassis for a TC engine?
Post by: Benjy on Wednesday,May 21, 2025, 09:38:29 AM
Ahoy All,

I posted this chassis for sale on FB and Bryan Boyle pointed out that it's a Special chassis meant for the TC engine but with an S2 front cross member fitted! I figured the front cross member had been changed because you can see the metal work is lightly buckled from the welding but I did not know that the Special chassis was straight along the top of the cross member.

As Bryan pointed out you would not be able to fit a Special body to this chassis without modifying the body.

I don't know the history of this chassis, nor why anyone would do such a thing but perhaps it's so you can have an S2 Renault body but with the TC engine. Does anyone know if this would work?

Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated!

Cheers

My sole thought and comment is that it appears to be located in a beautiful setting.

It does appear to be a frankenframe. The rear hoop seems to be for a 352 or 365 tranny, neither of which were used in the S2 according to the parts manual, but as noted, the 'T' section is for an S2. I would think it could be used with a TC/TCS body after modifying the body work to accommodate the angled ends of the 'T'.

Wouldn't it be easier to make the angled sections of the "T" flat?

If you can weld, maybe!  :)

seriously, you might be right. I have to wonder why someone would do this. Maybe that was the only 'T' he could find at the time...

Is this for a faux Type 47?

A type 47 tribute would be a good guess. Or, is this for a crossover/mash up with an S2 style front and a Type 74 rear body and presumably the twin cam engine?
I recently met a man whose name I have now forgotten who has an S2 with a Type 74 rear body and a Mazda inline 4 engine. He built the car himself and preferred the newer back over the older bread van.

You're right, it is a beautiful setting. We are in the La Creuse dept. of France. Right now it's glorious. The sound of birdsong is almost deafening. The roads are fun here too. The nearest traffic lights are 50 kms away and the nearest roundabout 25 kms away! No parking restrictions or tow away zones here. It's like going back in time!
