Could someone please confirm for me that I have the correct turn signal flasher unit? At low RPMs the timing of the flashing slows down and it even stops in the on position on the left side after a few seconds. Rev it up and the speed of the flashing picks up. No, I do not want to convert to LEDs. Thanks

Going out on a limb a bit here but I think your problem is more likely the corrosion on the posts or that the unit is old. Old style flashers work by heating a bi-metallic strip of metal. The heat causes the strip to bend braking or making the circuit. When the strip cools, it does the reverse (making or braking the circuit). The click you hear is the strip hitting the contacts. It could be that the corrosion on your posts is not letting enough current through the flasher so it doesn't heat up as easily or the strip is "worn out."
I'm not familiar with all the different kinds of flashers but yours appears to be a three post type. From your wiring diagram (and the S1 & S2 diagrams make my head hurt), it appears that the third post is to turn on the indicator light on the dash. I don't know but I suspect that all three post flashers work the same way so any three post mechanical flasher would probably work (and if that is true, any three post electronic flasher would work too but most don't make any sound and the ones that do "beep" rather than "click." I would give Ken at Dave Bean (208-754-5802) and see if he can help you.

Thank you BDA. I appreciate the explanation of it's function. Yes it is a three post. I would like to make sure that I am refitting the same model/manufacturer unit as installed by our Hethel friends.

It's the power consumption that causes the flashing. Since on an S1 there are 21W + 5W, this may be your problem with a 42/84W.

The original flasher’s flashing rate is voltage dependant. Thus your variable to non-existant flashing rate. Use s Tridon HD13 flasher. The flashing rate is not voltage dependant and there are much better made.

My S1
I use a standard flasher unit that runs on 2 x 21W.
But in turn signal mode, the consumption is 5W + 21W from the bulb + 21W from the non-bulb. And in warning mode, it's 5W + 21W + 5W + 21W. I added a switch for the warning lights.

I'm thinking about sticking with the old Cartier and live with the authentic experience of the flashing speed slowing down on low RPMs.
When I was a starving student, my roomate had a '65 Lincoln with pneumatic wipers. They too would slow down at idle. One day on a long road trip in heavy rain, they gave out, so we tied a string to either wiper, passing the string through the IVC windows and thus I operated the string while he drove the car. The good old days.
