Title: Luggage Tray by SJ Sportscars
Post by: My S1 on Monday,April 17, 2023, 09:24:02 AM
SJ Sportscars offers a reproduction luggage box/tray for the S1 Europas.  Has anyone purchased a tray from them?  Any comments on the quality?

I bought one off them for a Special a couple of years back and very pleased with it. It fits perfect, I just trimmed about 3/8th off the side lips . It is a good thickness and not flimsy.

Good to hear.  Apparently they took a mold off of an original so it should be accurate. It does not have the steel plate and insulation however.  I can restore my old beat plate or make a new steel plate.  What did you use for the insulation material between the steel plate and fiberglass?  My old one looks like asbestos.

You could use a few layers of raw fiberglass mat.

Probably made by Boss Motors who have the original molds of most Lotus fibreglass parts.

Yup, original was asbestos.  Really, really not recommended now! Be very cautious if disturbing your old one.

Yes indeed...I'll need to slip that mat into the landfill after midnight so the EPA police don't catch me...just kidding.  I do have some left over Kevlar cloth from an old project that could be used as insulation as well.

On my twin cam special I just made a replacement in aluminum, no insulation and the trunk doesn't get hardly warm.  I do have a rug too, but really, not much insulation needed if your muffler is in good order.  Saves weight too, steel isn't needed.  Of course the al sheet is spaced about 1/4 inch from the trunk bottom for air circulation, and no thermal conduction to the fiberglass.

On my S1, long journeys (400+km) has the trunk and its contents nicely warm.  You couldn't roast a duck but it would keep one warm.

Hi All,
Anyone know if the luggage tray will fit with this modified suspension?
I will be installing the stock exhaust.
Many thanks in advance.

If the square section cross bar is the same height above the frame Y, it should fit ok.  Measure from the top of the cross bar to the top of the body flange...any more than 10 1/2 inches, you'll be golden (Just measured 3291R)

Is that a twin-link set-up?  If so you might have to make step in the bottom of the luggage tray.  Not much, 1/2" or so but I had to do it to mine and that was with an original tray.
