WTB: Lower trim vinyl/rubber insert (gray in color, 6' long +/-) that slides in the aluminum channel, sits above the sill plate, and
The chromed pot metal end caps that attach with blind rivets.
Thanks
-
The original strips are stainless steel metal channel of a strange C shape, with open ends.
-
I very much doubt they are still available. I got a kit to replace the original from r.d.
-
These are definitely aluminum with a vinyl insert, with 1" long chrome closure caps that fit into the ends of the aluminum channel which hold the vinyl from sliding out the end. I doubt they have ever been off the car until now. I will try RD. Thanks

Just to be sure we're talking about the same thing (and I think we are), you're talking about the trim that runs between the wheel wells along the top of the trim panel (silver metalflake) under the doors, right?
What you describe is not a stock piece. I think I still have at least one piece of the original trim from my car. IIRC, it's made of stainless steel and about 1/4" wide. I haven't looked at them (it) so I'm not sure but I think they were pop riveted to the body. I don't remember if there was something to fill in the ends.
-
They have clips that are pop riveted to the body and the trim itself clips to these - maybe slides on. The rear clip on the drivers side has detatched on mine (rivet failed) and I need to sort it out. I still have the clip, but I have seen them for sale at SJS I believe.
I'm not sure if the trim is stainless or chrome plated.

Well, this just shows how bad my memory is! I both pieces I have. They are not stainless (I got a strong attraction to a magnet, the magnetic stainless steels I've checked have a weak magnetic attraction), the are a bit over 1/2" wide. They were not pop riveted to the body. So essentially, I got every detail wrong!
One is very straight, the other is a little bent and if you're good, you can probably straighten it. They are both pretty dirty but they don't appear to have any rust. I believe I also have the clips for them.
I've posted some pictures below. The picture of the bends are from one piece. The other is straight. If you're interested, let me know.

Well, I got this all wrong through ignorance! It appeared when I removed the aluminum strips they had never been disturbed, wrong! There are the holes for the blind rivets, plus holes for the stock clips for the pieces shown in BDA's pictures, you can see the shadow outline from the stock clips. The pieces I have are after market from the 1980's, which I found on the net and can still get the vinyl insert. Thanks for all the help and the offer, but I am going to use what I have. Sorry for the mix-up and trouble. I will endeavor to be more observant in future restoration and repair practices and related requests!
-
I don't think you have anything to apologize for. Getting mixed up is no crime (at least I hope it isn't or I'm in trouble!). I learned something, too! I'm just glad you figured out what you're going to do!

To fit the original SS strips, first you have to pop rivet the clips (old ones rust badly) in straight line. There are 5 clips on each side.
The C channel is a clip fit on the clips, you push the bottom into place, and then use a rubber hammer to get the C channel to fit over the clips.
-
While this is actively being discussed... It sounds like the 'C' channel snaps over the clips with the open part of the C facing the car.
That's at the top of the moulding, the big molded piece? How is the moulding anchored at the top where it meets that C channel?
-
The bottom trim has double stick tape on the top and a pop rivet in each end. I believe the bottom has a pocket that grabs the edges of the body shell.
-
I've not looked, but doesn't the bottom of the silver sill piece use these clips?

It looks like you're right. I didn't remember them from when I built my car.
You have to quit showing me how much I've forgotten! ;D

Sorry.
You've had your Europa long enough to be allowed to have forgotten while I've had mine only a few months and am still looking everything up. :)
