Title: Type 74 Door lock Mech
Post by: Jonathan1350 on Sunday,June 19, 2016, 02:27:44 AM
Hi,  on my TC I am trying to work out which vehicle the door lock assemblies are from.  The locks don't work so before I go pulling them to bits I want to know which vehicle they are off.

Dunno but they are not that complicated and are usually easily repaired with just a lube and adjust.

Don't forget those little circlips that fall off...the usual reason for non-functioning door locks.

I have noted that the door handles inside and outside look exactly like MGB bits. If so, the lock mechanisms should be related as well.

Here is the MGB door lock:-

It looks similar but I'd like to see the other side of the latch - as well as take a look at a real MGB latch. I'll try to remember that the next time I'm at an MG club meeting (they are a congenial bunch and welcome anyone with a Little British Car - even if it isn't an MG like a Lotus and even if it isn't that little like a Jaguar).

Maybe a little... It's hard to tell, but the striker (from the body) goes into the upper portion of the latch rather than the lower portion as it does on my TCS. I'm going to have to look at them side by side. Unfortunately, I couldn't find them on goldengate's cross reference (http://www.gglotus.org/ggpart/europacr.htm) but that part may have fallen through the cracks.

I thought the interior handles were the same but the exterior ones were different and more complex than that shown for the MG.  Here's a shot pinched from the internet of an S2/TC handle.  I seem to think the Europa catch is "more square shaped" than the MGB illustration although like BDA I'd need to see them side by side to be certain.

I have BL Dolomite & Toledo down as donors for the exterior handles and think the latches were from the same car. I do remember hunting autojumbles and finding several that looked the same style but were either too long or too short for the Europa pattern.

I recently bought some of the plastic trim U sections that slide around the internal handle and they were from an MGB supplier so think that suggests the internal handle is MGB.

The exterior handles and the latch I think are from jaguar XJ6,

These are the parts I am on about.
If the photos upload OK!
I don't want to start to strip them until I know and also there are breakers yards around here with many period cars on site!

The key locks you can buy new.  They come up on eBay time to time and at auto jumbles (plus I think Banks do them). There's a lock guy that does the UK auto jumbles, I can't remember his company name at the moment, I bought the whole set off him. I'll see if I can find his company info.
The catches are difficult to come by as most you will find are knackered.
