Title: SUCCESS! FOUND! WTB radiator for my 1970 S2
Post by: Tilux on Monday,November 16, 2015, 07:28:09 PM
Hello!
Well, mine is toast. Each time we repair one leak and pressure test it another one opens up.
Please let me know what you have.
Thanks!

Can the radiator shop install a new core for the old radiator?

New aluminum radiators are still available, I believe, if you can't find someone with a spare stock radiator . There were some Chinese made ones on ebay a while back. I don't know if they're still being made. There were a couple of group buys on the Yahoo mail list for Europa radiators from Mac's radiator in Portland, Oregon and Saldana somewhere in the Midwest. Contact them for prices. I picked up the one from Mac's.

Currently, there are no aluminum radiators for sale.

I had trouble finding one, too, but I found this one:

Thanks. That may be an option, but they may not ship for 30 days, and I'd like something sooner.

Did you email the ebay seller to find out when he was going to have them in stock again? I bought one in the spring and other than having to redrill some mounting holes for the fan and adding mounting holes for the screen on the back of the unit, it was fine. My old radiator was like yours. They guy in the radiator shop really tried, but gave up as it was too far gone. A re-cored radiator was $700 plus.

I contacted the supplier in China this morning and awaiting a reply. With luck they will be able to supply.

I agree with E Paul. If you can get an aluminum radiator, that would be the best way, but failing that, you might want to consider having a new one made from scratch rather than recore the radiator you have. I went that route when I was first building my car. I wanted to make sure my radiator was in good shape and the guy was appalled at how inefficient he said it was. He had built some radiators for some race cars so I had him build a new one for me. I replaced it with an aluminum one because I thought it might be even better (I also didn't appreciate how the temp gauge is graduated so it wasn't getting as hot as I thought), but I'm not sure I can tell that much difference - other than it looks REALLY good! It was over fifteen years ago and I have no memory of how much it cost, but it's something to investigate.

I would take an aluminum radiator in a heartbeat!  However, not one is currently available. In the meantime I would settle for an original one, just to get the Europa back on the road. I can always swap out an aluminum one later. Make sense?

I had my radiator re-cored at peaks auto in Penn. Fantastic quality as they regularly re do these radiators.  I sent a new electric fan with the unit and they remounted the support tabs.
Call Paul at 814-234-5209. I also opted for the SS screen and screw in temp sender.  If you want I can send pictures of my unit.

SUCCESS!!!
I found a radiator manufacturing company in China and they have built a new aluminum radiator.  They are shipping it this week.
I have attached pictures of it and will let you know how it works out. The fan was included, too.

It's hard to say for sure from the photos but it looks to me that the fan blades are set for sucking air rather than blowing.  If so, you may be able to flip the fan blade.  Otherwise replace it.

What happens if you reverse the polarity of the fan ? Does it go around the other way?

Yes it does.  However, fan blades have a curve to them that is used to "scoop" the air and force it in the required direction.  Running a fan blade backwards significantly reduces its efficiency: not a good thing on a Europa.

Where did you locate the supplier?

I did not want to recommend the supplier until I installed and ran the radiator to ensure its compatibility and reliability.  Only then would I be prepared to endorse their product.

However, I have had other requests for the contact information so here it is -

David Wang
info@winnerracing.com

Just to give you an idea of how closely David worked with me to ensure he was building the correct radiator, he sent me these photos, asking for the measurements from my original radiator.  As you can see he even wanted the size of the holes in the mounting tabs!

It sounds like he gave you good service. Hopefully, it will fit and work properly! It's nice that he made sure the fan mounting was right for your fan. I bought an aluminum radiator off of ebay. It looks a little different so it could have come from somebody else. Anyway, I got my fan separately from Amazon. I have no idea what they patterned the fan mounting stud positions from but the funny thing is that the fan mounting lugs were probably less than a quarter inch off! It was so close to fitting, it looked like it was intended for my fan, but they goofed in fabricating the mount. It didn't matter since in this case an inch was as good as a mile so it had to be modified to fit the fan.
