Great vintage Type 47 and Type 46? footage
« on: Saturday,October 19, 2019, 02:22:57 PM »
The whole 9 minute "1967" clip is interesting but the Europa clips don't appear till about 4 1/2 minutes into the documentary. There is film footage of the 47 GT's first appearance at the 1967 International Racing show in London.  Even weirder is footage of what appears to be a RHD S1, but I will bow to the expertise of the S1 owners. Also in the documentary you see shots of an Elan S3, a Type 19, a Type 31, and a Lotus Cortina, plus a lot of cool non-Lotus British cars.

The RHD S1 is one of the five Europa S1 prototypes, registration number KPW618E.
Some photographs of it appeared on Ebay UK a while ago. The car still exists in the UK and the current owner told me that it has been Colin Chapman's personal car, hence the RHD configuration.

Nockenwell:  Was it the only one of the five that was RHD?

Sorry, I don't know. According to Richard Mann the blue prototype (RAR949D) might have been a RHD one too. There is one black/white picture where it looks like the steering wheel is on the RH side. On the other hand the wiper is parked on the RH side which indicates a LHD car. A bit confusing.

Check this document here for information on the prototypes:

In this photo (RAR949D), definitely appears to be RHD.
