Clutch cable alternatives
« on: Thursday,March 02, 2023, 04:19:27 AM »
Available clutch cables seem rather pricey....has anyone used one from something else?
Seems I read about using a VW one somewhere? I think that was for the inner cable...I
think my outer cable is shot too....
The more I do the more I find I need to do....

Just my $.03...a new cable is plastic sheathed and teflon lined...and last time I bought one, was only $129 and fits just fine (without fettlling, I mean to say).  Even though the P/N is a 74 series,  that cable works for both S2 and later versions.

I know....it's the bits and bobs that kill us on these resurrection projects, but in this case, it's a one and done solution that works.

Again, just my $.03.

You can get bulk, lined, outer housing from some truck and motorcycle shops.  You can modify a VW Type 2 clutch cable but that will require some silver soldering.

Cable lengths vary from LHD and RHD.

   Turbo,
I used the VW cable but did not chime in because my clutch is stuck. Did the cable come with both end connectors? I had to make a barrel connector for the clutch end.

That’s probably a perfect fit, however it lacks the toggle that sits in the release bearing arm . It’s okay if you have it but I didn’t.  I made one from a bolt.

if you didn't, I have a couple extras from all the Europas I've pulled apart in the last 15 years (doing my best to cull the herd to make the remaining more valuable...;))
