my understanding is that the rear window installed also acts as a structural support, bracing the rear roof line, in addition to the rear bulkhead?   any modification should consider this.

I've not heard that one myself, but for anyone who's fitted a window on their own I'm sure they would agree that it's definitely hard work getting one in place and once there it's got to contribute to the roof panel stiffness.
