FS: Lotus Europa Special and Twin-Cam gear-linkage parts
« on: Saturday,May 23, 2020, 04:32:39 AM »
After nearly 50 years of ownership of Europas, a JPS +2S130/5 and an Esprit, I am gradually withdrawing from Lotus-related activity. I live in Sheffield, UK.
As a result, I have a small quantity of spares that are available.
These are:
1.  Unique repair kits for the central universal-joint assembly and selector-shaft coupling £50 each/£90 for two.  (Only 14 remaining).  I have used these kits successfully to restore precision in the linkage yet retain originality.  Full instructions for fitting supplied.
2.  Two refurbished central universal-joint assemblies i.e. with new u/js and threaded spigots. £75 each. I have a third where the forward-facing spigot was not renewed because it is serviceable. That one is £60.
3.  Brand new grease-nippled spherical-joints to accompany 2.  £12.50.
These are one-off sales.  Once they are gone, they are gone.
If you want further details, please e-mail me.

Update 01 June 2020:
1.  All of the Universal Pivot Assemblies and spherical joints have gone.
2.  I have only one of the repair kits left for sale.

Hi
Thank you for your welcome.
It is unusual to have two "Winters" who are Lotus Europa enthusiasts but while we have the same surname, we are not related.
Forty five years ago, I bought my first Lotus: a regency red, oatmeal-interior Europa twin-cam.  That got me into twin-cam engines and in particular, the cylinder heads.
You might like the attached that shows why I got into repair kits for the gear-linkage system.
Best wishes
Edward

Thank you BDA.
I do indeed have many experiences that I have assembled over the last five decades.  There aren't too many of us who were alive when the Europa was released or for that matter, when it was designed.
Best wishes

All the refurbished universal joint assemblies and spherical joints have been sold.  Moreover, I have only nine of the repair kits left.  Once they are gone, like the last episode of MASH, that's it.  Over.

An anecdote about the design of the linkage for the type 352 gearbox and later, the 365.
My contact at Torrington from 45 years or so ago was Malcolm Stewart.
He was summoned to Hethel to help design the system.  Evidently, he and one of the designers spent a couple of weeks trying to devise a linkage.  It could not be the same as the soon-to-be superseded 336.
They were struggling.
Malcolm told me that he and the designer were at a desk when they were joined by Colin Chapman.
It was explained to Chapman what they were trying to do.  Chapman said, "Let me have a look at your drawings".
He quickly scanned over them and then stated, "Right, you need a system that starts at the gear lever and ends at the gearbox's selector shaft.  Something like this."
He sketched a design.
"There", said Chapman, "We need a jointed system for ease of use.  Use tubes; they are light. Only two are required. A front tube connected to a rear tube by a universal-joint.  The rear tube needs a coupling onto the selector shaft with the same type of uj.  Oh, and put a support for the centre joint.  A rose joint should do it, with a bracket bolted onto the bellhousing.  Malcolm. your steering joints should do the trick.  Get this drawn up."
And with that, Chapman proceeded on his way.
It had taken him only a few minutes to consider the problem and sketch out a solution.  And do what Malcolm and the engineer had been wrestling with for weeks.
Malcolm told me he had heard that Chapman was a brilliant designer but was dumbfounded by just how good he was.

Thank you Dakazman.
You might like might entry immediately above about the design of the linkage for the 352 and 365 gearboxes.
