Title: JPS color
Post by: kram350kram on Thursday,November 19, 2020, 08:26:05 PM
On the JPS, was the rocker panel painted silver or gold? I have seen both, but was wondering what was factory. Thanks for any input

According to this article, all rocker panels were silver (http://www.lotus-europa.com/jps.html). I%u2019ve never seen gold ones except those that were painted by the owner.

Edit: Looking at the article again, one thing I%u2019m pretty sure Andy Grove, the Lotus archivist, told me is that only 100 were built, not 400 as noted in the article.

I'm not sure what the archivist means when he said 100 JPS were built when there is supposedly no physical difference between a regular TC Special and a "JPS".

I've always been under the impression that there were 200 JPS roundel "badges" distributed to dealers to place on specific Specials dashboards. I had #188 on mine, now sold, I'm confused.

#188 had the silver metal flake rocker panel cover, same as my TCS.

I shouldn’t have gone by memory. Andy’s email is on my computer and it crashed yesterday. I thought he had written that there were 100 of them “made” and I thought I remembered that he was perplexed by dash badges with numbers starting with “1.” All that is unfortunately subject to the quality of my memory which leaves a lot to be desired. Might they have started with #100? I have no idea. Your supposition that 200 were “made” may be more accurate.

You are quite right that the only thing that distinguishes a black Special with gold stripes from a JPS is the dash badge so JPSs weren’t made as much as chosen (thus the quotes around “made” above). I also thought I remembered from Andy’s email that there was a factory component to which Specials became JPSs, but unfortunately, that is also subject to the same aforementioned memory. When I get my computer running again, I’ll be able to refresh my memory.

Sorry to add any confusion and apparently, my iPad does weird things with apostrophes and quotes.

I'd read somewhere that the silver rocker panels could "rust" to a gold color. But they were all painted silver.

Never heard of that kind of rust!

Edit: Now that I think about it a bit more, you may be referring to the clear paint that yellows over time.

Mine definitely yellowed over time. One side far more than the other.

Yep, so did mine & I liked the shade so I left them as is...

While I can not trust my memory completely, I seem to remember that the black JPS Specials (at least some of them) had the gold sill covers.

The attached sheets refer to gold trim, but I do not think they are referring to the gold striping, as that was on many of the Europa Specials of various colors.

At the time of purchase, I was told there were 200 JPS Specials made for the USA market.
