Title: LOG 38
Post by: BDA on Wednesday,August 15, 2018, 08:16:00 PM
I expect some of us made it to LOG 38 and hopefully got to see Andretti's 79, Black Beauty - and the last Lotus F1 Championship car. Also hopefully, some of you took some pictures.

Please feel obligated to tell us all about it in a post and also get Lotus Joe to add a gallery for LOG 38 and you can post your many beautiful pictures so the rest of us can vicariously enjoy your experience.

With my Europa restoration on hold waiting for the body to be completed, I took my Elan S1. The road trip to LOG38 started on Thursday morning with two other Lotus Elan owners traveling through the back roads of the Allegany mountains. It took two glorious days to get to LOG38 with 600 miles of winding roads, lots of elevation changes and hardly any traffic.  I'm embarrassed to say that I got to speak with only a few Europa owners during LOG but it wasn't for lack of trying.  Every time I went to someone's Europa they were in deep conversation so I thought I would just come back. Well, before I knew it the day was over and with me being in the Elan section of the concours I had more than enough conversations going on. The return trip was two days of mostly rain but still a fun drive.  Total drive was just over 1000 miles and my 64 Elan S1 ran without a hitch (just don't ask me about the water leaks in the driving rain). Here are a few photos for those that didn't get to come to LOG38. And I'm pleased to say I won three first prizes for Elan S1/S2, Scale model and small photo. Hit the trifecta!

It was great to see the 79 again. Too bad it caught fire during the track day on Monday.

The several photos of the black Europa twin cam is a rare 1600 mile original car. It was pristine!

Left Angle's spectacular Europa.  I came back three times to talk to you, twice you had lots of people asking questions and the third time you weren't there!  Bummer. Maybe LOG39 when I will have my Europa running and you will have finished yours?

CL:  Sat next to your son at dinner and watched you juggling those awards.  Super job!

Mmmm, my two son’s weren’t there. Some one claiming to be related to me?

My bad.  I was told by someone the young man to your left was your son.   He wasn’t very talkative and we’re all first timers so everyone was unknown to us.

How was your first LOG LeftAngle? Did you enjoy it?

Great photos, thanks for posting. I'm glad you enjoyed the LOG experience, and had a good time travelling to and from. I road tripped my Europa to LOG 33 a few years ago and had a blast.

And I'm pleased to say I won three first prizes for Elan S1/S2, Scale model and small photo.
Just curious, do you build scale model cars?

I build scale model cars, boats, gliders, RC Formula one Cars. I won first prize for my Lotus Garage diarama with a Lotus Exige S on the lift.

I am excited to hear LOG 39 will be in Massachusetts!  :pirate: (Sturbridge? Springfield?) Anyway, too close to have any excuse not to go. Hope to meet many of you there!

Did I enjoy LOG38?   Remarkably enjoyable!  Do you remember the bit where a guy puts money into a coffee vending unit, pushes the button and coffee starts pouring out behind the clear plastic door?   And after it stops, the cup drops into place?

That about sums up what happened to me.  I went to LOG 38 knowing no more than what was on Lotus inc’s web page and what I read in the blogs.   I knew the schedule of when things were happening, a couple of meals I was going to eat and where I’d be sleeping.   Other than that, I went  in blind.

I didn’t know about a mini concours, that “open bar” meant there was a meal with food that went along with it or that there were a multitude of categories where a car might be entered into the mini concours that better fit its type.... That is, until yesterday when my August reMark arrived with the LOG38 event guide on the back half.

However, I met Ray D my go-to supplier of old and upgraded parts. Met and enjoyed the company of the Vacarros, who I find are only two degrees of separation from me and many, many other friendly and easy to engage with people.

It’s something I could be easily talked into doing again.
I’d love to come back next year, but Massachusetts is on the other side of DC and I’ve never found a time where hauling a trailer anywhere near there is a good idea.

I’m reminded of Stirling Moss’ quote at the 1955 Mille Miglia after passing a stalled (I believe) Lotus 6 at the side of the road. “Driving a Lotus is a triumph of bravery over intelligence."

My bravery might be overtaken by intelligence next year, but maybe LOG40?

Thanks for posting your stories and pictures, guys. Glad you had some great weather for the event.

Sorry to here about the wet ride home, certified but the wins probably made up for it.

I can't build models (well, not unless it's a plastic kit) so I'm fascinated by the detail that real model makers get into their creations. My local garage has one on their counter and well over ten years later I still stop and look inside !

If you have your diorama close to hand,   a photo would be good and definitely "on topic"  :)

Brian

Edit to add - well done on the trophies, winning one section is impressive but collecting 3 is true excellence.

It was great to see the 79 again. Too bad it caught fire during the track day on Monday.

Sad indeed.
Someone posted a YouTube video of the aftermath with fire extinguishers etc.

LeftAngle, Glad to hear your thoroughly enjoyed your first LOG.  There is nothing like being surrounded by lots of people with like minded interests regarding Lotus.  Regarding the trip North next year for LOG39, I hear you loud and clear about going through the DC area.  Have done it many times (my son's go to college in Savannah, GA) and my recommendation is to plan to do it in the middle of the night or very early morning.  I have driven a large rental truck and towed a trailer through rush hour beltway traffic.....not fun. Better still is to do a road trip (no trailer, drive the car!) that completely removes going through the area. Just take all back roads and plan the amount of days it will take. That's what we did for LOG38 and really enjoyed the trip.

Brian, here is a photo of my garage diorama that won first prize for large models.  Thanks for the complement on winning three contests.  I was very surprised.

 :)

Now that's what I call a model.

How on earth did you get all the scale tools, are they individually made or can you buy them ?  I could look at that every day and pick up something different every time there's so much detail. Brilliant, I can see why you won.

Thank you Brian! Most of the scale tools and accessories can be bought, I made a number of things and have been collecting some for several years. All the posters I made. The LED lighting ended up being two different colors which I need to correct (yellow light on the left  side and white in the right side. I like the white light). The twin Cam engine came from one of my Lotus models. There are lots of details that aren’t apparent until you look at it a couple of times.....like a poster (which you can’t see in this photo) using the LOG38 logo and identifying all the LOG’s I have gone to. The Exige S is a die cast model which I had custom white round number 111 stickers made to scale. The scale Senna model came from the UK when I happened upon it on one of my trips. The large posters on either end of the garage are of the shop where my track Exige S’ where built “Sports and Specialist Cars” and include my cars being built. There is more, but you get the idea. It’s always a work in progress  :beerchug:

Here are a couple more photos so you can see more:

Well, now that I know what you look like (I think I got a straight-on look at your face behind all those awards in your arms when you stood... and the model... OMG.  That and the guessing game were the only exhibits I spent time with... kudos).
We’ll be able to start the weekend unintroduced in the future.  I’m sorry I wasn’t at the car when you were, but the sheer number of catagories and Loti to be seen and voted on was overwhelming.   The remote trailer parking location and the requirement of pushing the car across the field cut into my time as well.  If it weren’t for Brian, I’d still be struggling to get the thing onto the trailer.
All the “official” photos (I’ll take partial responsibility for that by telling, not requesting the photographer to shoot all the first timers... what a mob!) ate up a lot of time as well.   I was disappointed there wasn’t another entire concourse day.
I hope you saw my hastily written and printed card that outlined my logic and reason for making the car.
I‘ve been working on the electrics but only able to wire up 3 “bling” components.  The engine light, the angel eyes and my single DIN iPod gps/speedometer/internet/music contraption.  The lights were difficult to see and I eventually turned and left the iPod on, but if you weren’t looking for it, chances are you wouldn’t have noticed.

btw, we live 20 miles off 95 between the NE and Savannah, just north of Hilton Head.   The next time you come this way, pm me and possibly we could get together.

Amazing work!

It sounds like LOG 38 was a huge success - except for the burnt Black Beauty!  :( I'm really sorry I couldn't make it. It's unlikely that I'll make the next one in Massachusetts.

Congratulations to you, Certified for your trifecta! That really is something to be proud of and your model scene is spectacular! I know not having your Europa there was disappointing but that ought to take some of the sting from that! Thanks for your pictures, too! Maybe you could ask Lotus Joe to create a LOG 38 section of the Gallery so we can keep them with the LOG 37 pictures.

I'm glad you made it too Left Angle and that you had the expected good time. I know you and your car got a lot of well deserved attention!

Since Lotus Ltd. is a national (continental?) club, it's reasonable that they will try to have LOGs in different parts of the country so it wouldn't surprise me if LOG 40 was on the West Coast. In any event, there are several of us in North & South Carolina and probably Virginia too. Maybe we could organize our own mini LOG. Interested?
