Title: Very original type 46 on craigslist
Post by: gideon on Friday,July 13, 2018, 01:34:04 PM
I came across this ad on craigslist and thought this is too good to ignore.  It should go to someone who can put it back on the road. Properly.

No affiliation.  I just thought that maybe there was somebody on here who should see this ad.  I'd buy it myself if I had somewhere to put it, and more time to give it, etc.

Nice specimen! How does one evaluate the glassed-in frame? Being an upstate NY car with 40k mi and some (thought not excessive) visible rust, I would guess the frame is borderline. Wish I had room for one more.

It would be useful to know where it lived when the original owner had it. Living in Upstate New York near a lake is not a good sign. That's a lot of money for a car with a frame that likely must be cut out and repaired or replaced. If the frame can be shown to be good, that would go a long way.

Virtually every S1 will require the frame to be removed and repaired or replaced.  The (very) rare exceptions are vehicles from the dry southern US states.  Of all the S1s I have heard about for the last 7 years, only 1 had an ok frame.

Just repairing another TCS chassis.

They go along the bottom of the front box section where the closer plate bolts on with 3 x 1/4 UNF bolts, and at the bottom of the Y.

Once the frame is fully stripped, they are quite easy to cut out the rusty bits, and weld in new plates.

How the hell do you cut out rusty metal and weld in new if it is bonded to the shell, without setting fire to the fibreglass?

Never known an S1 to have the body still bonded to the chassis except maybe a new one. Had my body off the first time in 74' (67 S1) and there was no bonding at all.

They were never "bonded" in the modern sense.  They were sandwiched between the upper and lower molded sections and then riveted along the bottom of the "T" and spine, and a few sideways hidden by the seats.  Bolted to the rear body.  They were then sealed around the front suspension and the front of the T-section.

Are those the proper tail light for a true S1?

This is a very tidy looking starting point for an S1b.  I wish I had room for one more but the wife will kill me. LOL.

Looks like a lovely car. All the important and hard to find S1 parts are present (push button doors, instruments, seats, etc.). And it seems to be a largely unmolested/unmodified car - very valuable. The chassis has to be checked and, as said before, most probably needs to be separated from the car to fix it.

I think the S1B is the least attractive one of the S1 variants as it has lost the beautiful Carello tail lights. But the price seems to be about right or might even be on the cheap side. And every S1 Europa is such a rare and lovely car.

The ad is online again. And at $8250 it looks like a bargain to me.

It shows as expired for me now too. It was online yesterday for a while but seems to be deactivated again. Sorry.
