Title: TC oil pick up assembly??
Post by: andy harwood on Wednesday,November 28, 2012, 03:45:25 PM
While dissambling the engine, I dented/crushed the oil pick up tube trying to remove it. It may be resuable, but one of the 3 tabs holding the strainer on was missing.
So, a new one would be nice. Is this a unobtainable part? I didn't see it listed in Dave Bean Catalog. Is there a substitute that can be used?
thanks in advance

Andy,
I just pulled mine two days ago. I used a paint heat gun and heat the block area around the base of the tubes.  I'm not sure if it helped but I finally lost what little patience I have and then got a 6" pipe wrench and gently started tuning, first one way then the other.  Finally they both came out........I would was lucky because I could feel the tube starting to give in on the sides.

As for the pickup, I have been told that there is a new oil pump that doesn't require a pickup tube going into the sump.  Frankly I can't imagine how that works, but I got the info from a good source.

You can fix your tube by heating it with a torch, about an inch on both sides beyond the pinched area and gently hammering down a rod inside.  This will round it out nicely.   Make sure you pull out the rod  :FUNNY:

As for the filter pickup, I need to think about that one.
If you can post a picture it may be helpful to get our creative juices flowing.

Hi Andy,

Isn't it a standard Ford part ?  I'm not sure about a new part but if you wanted to replace it I'm sure there's loads of breakers yards that could supply one.

But I must admit I'd follow Mike on this and just knock the old one back into shape. And if there were any doubts about the strainer staying fixed then I'd probably just wire it in place with a bit of stainless wire.

A buddy just reminded me...............I was supposed to put the solid rod in first, before I wrenched out the tube..........so it wouldn't crush........guess I lucked out.  Next time.

Later pumps do not need the drain tube as excess pressure is relieved into the pump intake. They still need the pickup, though!
I guess someone got confused.
