I just posted the link on ebay for what looks like a good donor car for many .

I wonder if $4000 starting bid is a bit too much...
-
For just the gearbox most definitely, however maybe the seller will pull the gearbox out and sell separately.
I know it a long shot. If it were closer to me i would purchase the car.

Are sure the transmission in that ebay car is a 336?
-
From the sellers description, says its a 4 speed , I thought all 4 speeds were 336 ,but i learn new things daily.

It could be a 352. I'm not up on all the differences except the 352 mounts to the rear hoop the same way as the 365.
-
Thanks BDA,
So does a 352 gearbox easily install into runningwilds car? I also am looking for another bolt in replacement for my 336 , I just want something easy at this point. I told runningwild about this possible replacement so that he can finish his build. He may have a lead but i like to pass on some hope.

336 has a side shift while the 352 has a rear shift like the 365. Completely different linkage.
-
Thanks JB ,
Now i can kick myself for passing on a 336 gearbox several months ago for $385.00. Condition unknown.
Like I said, its only a want right now and not sure if it will be needed. I also was told by the po that my box was locked up, from shifting however i managed to free it from not shifting, now it still sits on its shelf. I'm starting to understand the difference in gearing and shifting arrangements between even the lotus and Renault .

336 transaxles were also used in Renaults. They will turn the wrong way and have a lower final drive. You need one from a Europa to get four forward gears and 3.56 diff.
-
Now tell me thats not confusing, 336 designator is then so ambiguous. Is there a visual key to identify the lotus and Renault? I don't want to hijack this thread so I will research the site and find a ," AIOP - All you wanted to know about gearboxes/gearing/ modifications but were afraid to ask ." AIOP - is all in one place.

Michel at Alpine America has 336 boxes. However he is gone for the winter. Not sure of the $ but need rebuilding. Tom

As the Alpine A110 had the engine in the rear like the Europa, was the gearbox for the A110 modified in any way to make it rotate the wheels Lotus fashion, rather than Renault FWD fashion?
-
Many period Renaults had rear engines, the Europa had a “mid-engine” so they have different directions of output shaft rotation. R17s are a good source as they had the engine in front of the transaxle unlike the R16. With the arrival of the R17, Renault no longer had to modify the boxes to suit the Europa. Unfortunately that meant we were stuck with the 3.7x diff rather than the 3.56 of the modified boxes. So the 352, 395 and 365 boxes from the R17/15 can be used in a Europa with just the change of output shafts being the only required mod.

Thanks JB
That paragraph needs be be a sticky note on the tech page!
Clear and concise.

I happen to have a 336 transmission from my '71 S2 that I don't need. It shifts, inputs and outputs move fine and it had oil in it. Unsure about other condition. Let me know if you're interested (or if you need any other running gear since I'm doing a conversion to mine).

Did you find your 336? I have one that I would trade for the NG box you have... Which one is it?
