Sealed throttle shaft bearings
« on: Sunday,June 03, 2018, 06:32:03 AM »
For those of us with side draught Webers (and maybe as out of the loop as I), you may not know there are now sealed throttle shaft bearings available. Supposedly, they negate the need for the leather seals and their associated hardware. I checked over at sidedraft_central and they are appoved, though dcoe_tuner, the moderator over there, still used the leather seals at least initially admitting it was overkill. I plan on converting to them soon and found a very economical kit on Amazon (https://smile.amazon.com/WEBER-THROTTLE-BEARING-SEALED-PM3760/dp/B01MSBBENQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1528031651&sr=8-1&keywords=Dcoe+bearing). They are, of course, also available on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=dcoe+bearing&_sacat=0).

I've been investigating this further and changing the bearings is not a trivial matter - especially if your throttle shaft is brass. I'm in a discussion with Keith (dcoe_tuner) on sidedraft_central and he recommends leaving it alone if there is nothing else wrong.

For those who are thinking about it (for example, you are rebuilding your carbs or want to upgrade as part of a larger carb project), he recommends still using the leather seals since the bearing's seals are for grease and not air. Also the adjustment of the throttle butterflies in the throat is very important and not trivial.

There is always more to learn!
