WTB 336 gearbox.

Ford or Renault bellhousing?

This seems an excellent place for 336 gearbox parts including the elusive speedo drive.

Located in Belgium, but the site translates into English.

€1,800 exchange, plus VAT tax and carriage seems to make gearboxes an expensive item.

I'm assuming that the 336 gearbox listed on the site is for the R16s only. Also, perhaps I'm asking too little for the Lotus 336 boxes I've sold in the past.

The Hewland diff would be different.

I think the Renault diff would allow you 4 reverse gears and 1 forward. The thought of doing 120 in reverse is not a good one.

Does anyone know if the splined spacers which cover the O rings on the diff output shafts are Renault or Lotus parts as they are not shown on the diff parts diagram. These are the spacers which slide down the splines and which the shims butt up against to get the roll pins exactly lining up in the shaft and driveshaft 5mm holes.

I don't think the Hewland would give you four reverses and one forward. It is designed as a mid engine transaxle in the first place. (Is it true that at least one Renault tranny requires that the crown gear be swapped to the other side of the pinion?). Since the Mk. 8 and FT200 Hewland trannies would easily mate to a TC motor since they were used on different Kent style blocks. I don't know about the Renault motors but I suspect if you looked somebody in Europe would have something to make it work

On the other hand, not having synchronizers and straight cut gears, they wouldn't make good street trannies.

R16 336 transaxles do indeed turn the other way.  Lotus 336 transaxles are unique.

R17 transaxles do turn the right way.  The four speed is the 352 and the five speeds are 365 and 395.

The seal run/spacer is a Lotus only part.  Though you could easily make one from R16 or R17 half-shaft, inner CV joints.

Lotus 336 gearboxes are not worth much as they are very reliable and sturdy.  No demand = low price.

As you suggested, I bought 2 x used drive shafts from Renault 16 in Holland. €75 each plus import tax (VAT @ 20%).

When you cut the inner rubber gaiter covering the CV joint, lots of smelly oil comes out all over the place, 4 large ball bearings fall out, and the inner part of the driveshaft falls away very easily.

The spacer is 36mm in diameter and about 11.2mm thick, but the spacer I am using for a pattern had 1.1mm of shims next to it. The inner part of the driveshaft is also 36mm as you would expect, and the length of the inner splines is about 44mm so I should be able to get 3 spacers made from each driveshaft. Thank you for the tip JBC, it seems we can make unobtainium with a bit of ingenuity.
