Post by: mike alain on Tuesday,March 30, 2021, 03:51:57 AM
Folks,   read the shop manual, no mention of any addition of an gasket sealer when I install the BOTTOM  gasket on the 4 cylinder sleeves, I have cleaned the block and sleeves
real good, will install pistons in them today, when I drop it in do I do anything other then slip them on and install?   1969  s2 renault  821-11   engine.   Thanks.  Mike.

You have to set the cylinder protrusion first.  It's in the manual but not in the right order.  They have you fitting the pistons and then checking the liner protrusion.  You need to do the liner protrusion first with a bare, dry block.  Mark the liners and note which gaskets go where for when you assemble the engine.  I use a non-hardening sealer on the liner base gaskets myself, either hylomar or Permatex aviation gasket maker #3.

Some gasket sets do not include the liner gaskets.  The R16 shop and Meca sell them separately.

Later engines use O rings, these aren't selective, just fit & forget as far as I am aware, thats what I did 30 years ago, no problems in 4 seasons of hard racing.

Hi Mike,
Be sure to check the block spigot area where the liners seat for corrosion.

Afterwards put locks in place to keep them from moving , fill block with water and leave overnight and then check for leaks.
When you get to the head remember to install the lifters first.😅.  Gavin gave me that advice in advance, it wasn’t in the manual.   Fill cam area with oil is.
