Post by: lotusfanatic on Wednesday,March 28, 2018, 02:17:46 AM
I’ve just seen this on fleabay UK,
(I’ve no connection with the seller and I apologise if this is in the wrong place)

Lotus Europa s2, 1971 Barn Find Last registered keeper since 1982.  https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263567261623

Wow, that is expensive for the condition it is in. No wonder people in the UK are buying cars in the US and shipping them over.

I had a look at a similar car 18 months ago which was half that price, if I remember correctly..
It was difficult to separate it and get an exact price as the seller was really keen to sell the car with a ‘package’ of new parts which ran to thousands of £££s.

That will cost in excess of £12,000 to renovate if you did all the mechanic bits yourself, so paint and trim done by others.

So it is is worth say £20,000 when completed in very good condition, you are doing all the work for nothing.

Tell him he is dreaming.............

it's interesting that a right hand drive car in the UK has a speedometer in "miles" per hour?   Were they all that way?

When did the UK join the Common Market? Did the conversion to metric start then?

The last time I was there in the mid 2000s, speeds were still in mph.

It's still MPH.

We still have speedometer in MPH (with KPH somewhere on the clock)
Many modern cars, motorcycles too, have a clock/read out which gives either figure with a simple push of a button.

And going metric happened before we joined the common market started in the 60’s. Car wheel diameter still in inches. Beer served in pints (the proper pint👍). A lot of cars built in 60’s to the 80’s have mixed fixings, just like the Lotus.. I can spot the difference in the threads a mile away.

Most over here who cherish the Europa are more "mature" Brits, so we are used to dealing with both metric and imperial. "2.4 metres of 4" x 2" please."

We even remember £2-12s-6d.  which was a fair amount of money in those days.

Currency went metric on 15th February 1971 when a Mars bar went from 9d to 4p overnight.

Most sporting events use metric measurements, but our cricket pitch is still 22 yards, and a soccer free kick requires defenders to be 10 yards from the ball but Rugby Union is all metric.

Confused?

We can handle it all, over here.

I’m (only just) too young to recall the ‘old’ money but I served an apprenticeship as an Toolmaker / Precision Engineer in the early ‘80s and was taught to be conversant in both imperial and metric for dimensions and tolerances. I automatically translate dimensions from one to the other in my head even now! (and if I’m near my trusty Zeus book, I’ll check up on my calculations!)

The design engineers I work with here in the states have all decided to take matters into our own hands and make the switch to metric, and thumb our collective noses at the “official” weights and measures system of the USA. So it is somewhat ironic that my new choice of automobile requires substantial additions to my imperial tool collection.

Most sporting events use metric measurements, but our cricket pitch is still 22 yards . . .

Same here in Oz but we make up for any differences by using sandpaper on the ball.  :FUNNY:

which cost the national team A$12m in sponsorship, and the captain A$3m over the next year that he draws unemployment benefit.

Reminds me of Toyota rally team and the turbo restrictor, and Russia and the Olympic drug testing fiasco. The TV cameras pick up a lot these days. Lancia were using nitrous from the fire extinguishers in their rally cars, and Nissan were using "movable" restrictors on their turbos too in WCR.

4129R,

Ain't that the truth.
Steve Smith (Captain) faced the media yesterday and broke down a number of times . . seemed genuine to me.
He had no idea of the wide ranging ramifications of all this. It's pretty shameful.

Ok, I realise we're drifting off topic here and I'll admit that I'm not a big cricket fan but this thing is being blown out of all proportions and I do feel a bit sorry for the Aussies. OK, according to the rules the guys cheated. They were caught, thrown off the team and for me that's good enough.

It's not as if it's a particularly clever form of cheating, it's laughingly basic.  If the umpire or batsman thinks the ball is bending unnaturally in flight then just grabbing hold of it is going to show why and the ball gets changed.  If it happens twice, someone gets a hard word.  TBH it seems a daft way of cheating to me, but there ya go.

Now compare this with other sports where it's pretty clear that athletes are taking banned drugs to enhance performance which, unless actually caught with the stuff in their bloodstream, will go entirely undetected.   I'm a keen cyclist and it's been rampant for years, even in when I started in the 60s it was around and anecdotal comments from UK amateurs infer that it's even down to club level these days.  Now that's proper cheating.....

Alas, cycling is not special in this regard.  Football, both variations, are rife with drug assisted players.

Yes, all true.
I don't know if anyone saw vision the actual incident but the camera work was impressive.

I'm not much of a cricket follower, anyway.
Although with bike racing, it appears I've won as many Tour de France titles as Lance armstrong.  :))

Back to the cricket pitch. You mean a “Chain” not 22 yards. That’s the proper dimension.  Or 4 “Rods”

No, a chain is what they put on the legs of the convicts before they deported them to Australia, where they were taught how to use sandpaper.

Oi !

I'll have you know I'm a £10 POME.
Actually, that was probably a weeks wages back in the day, so a pretty good deal for a six week all inclusive trip on a liner.
