Ignition coil hot
« on: Thursday,May 19, 2022, 12:44:33 PM »
Hi guys

When I turn the key to ignition position, the coil become very hot in a few minutes. It doesn't seem normal. New wiring harness was fitted after front chassis T replacement.
Which could be the matter?
Car is a an early Lotus Europa TC with not ballasted coil.

Thank you

Disconnect the wire that goes to the points (white with a black tracer).  All good now?  If so, it’s because engines have a tendency to stop turning where the points are closed.  This means the primary circuit is energized which will quickly heat up the coil.  Do also check and make sure you are using a coil with at least 3 ohms resistance in the primary circuit.

Hi,

at the moment the car is fitted with lumenition ignition coil. Red wire is connected to +, brown wire to - and metal box to ground. Distributor is a lucas 23D. I'm sure it's an electrical issue because the engine start well but RPM dont' grow smooth.

Thank you
