Always wanted to have a snorkel to test the effect of cold air feed…perhaps a smidge of ram air….looks like the way I would experiment with to keep the sides clean……it is exactly what I have in the engine bay of my Land Rover 90 …hidden away
The side vents look like the vents one would find at a builders merchant over here.

There's a video on youtube of this car at a show. Some guy talking about it. It's a beautiful car and I'm sure a lot of fun. He's done a lot of work on it. I don't know these engines but a built 4 valve 2 liter at 14 psi should be at least 350 hp.
