Any Pertronix (or Lucas dizzy) experts out there?
« on: Thursday,February 18, 2021, 05:21:53 PM »
I'm having some ignition problems so I reviewed my ignition system:

Lucas 23D4 dizzy
Pertronix LU-142A Ignitor   (actually for the Lucas 25D distributor)
Pertronix 40611 Flame-Thrower coil (3 ohm)

When I looked at the Pertronix website, it said I should be using the 7LU-148 Igniter in my 23D4 dizzy.

I've been using the LU-142A Ignitor for over 10,000 miles and several years without issue (possibly until now). It fits in the dizzy perfectly. I want to use the proper Ignitor but the only difference I can find (other than the dizzy they are designed for) is 7LU-148 is about twice the price of the LU-142A. The fellow at Pertronix I chatted with didn't know what made them different either.

Does anybody know what is different about the Lucas 23D4 and 25D dizzies that would require different Ignitors? Or even more unlikely, what the functional difference between the LU-142A and 7LU-148 Ignitors is?

The 142 is just a plain-Jane ignitor and the other is an ignitor 3.

Thanks JB! It’s confusing that Pertronix lists them for different dizzies.
