Title: Barrett-Jackson: Europa Special
Post by: 2766R on Wednesday,January 08, 2020, 08:50:50 AM
It will be interesting to see how far this one will go for.  No reserve.  Also listed in Hemmings.  Seems to be mostly original, especially the business end, sans cross over tubes and cast exhaust manifold.  Wish there was more interior shots though.

Nice looking Europa but it won’t sell for much at BJ. Wrong buyers at this event. I’d be amazed if it exceeded $20K. Will be a great deal for someone.

A 1969 Europa S2 sold for $21,100 at BJ Las Vegas back in 2018

Vegas is a completely different market and clientele.  Never the less, interested in how the auction turns out.

Not knowing anything about the S2 you compared the Twin Cam to, it's interesting that the S2 came out ahead of the TC.

I think it’s less about which model of Europa than it is the market location of the auction.

I am perfectly happy to have the europa stay out of their sights... I just wish they would forget about a few of the other cars I would love to have...

For what it's worth, a 1972 TR6 sold for $55,000 and a Triumph 1967 GT6 sold for $39,600 at the same Scottsdale auction.

Yes, I saw those cars being sold. Pretty special builds. Europa’s are an acquired taste that some of us lust after.

There were a lot of well restored cars being sold for less than what it cost to paint them. And some that went for ridiculous money.

Those Triumphs must have been special builds. From the history on BaT, those prices are very rich.

I agree that the Europa is an acquired taste for some - I would think that that applies more to people who have tried to get in one before (or know people who have) rather than more casual observers. That being said, I would expect a Europa to go for more than a comparable TR6 or GT6.

Here are the two links of the Triumphs.

When I see what people are asking for TR3's and MGA's and I think about what I sold mine for..well, dang.

Generally, as these cars were sold in large numbers, at those prices you are buying the restoration, not the car.  In other words, cars restored at a certain shop, to a certain standard, are worth $55K, not the particular car.  Every time an auction like this occurred, people would drag out there "somewhat-less-than-fine" cars out for an appraisal.  How come my (insert pile of poop) is only worth $2K when one sold for $55K just last week?  No problem we'd say.  Just spend $100K and your car will be worth $55K too.

Agreed JB. Both the triumphs were restored to as new condition and came out of a private collection. I’m sure big money was spent on both and the sale price reflected  a small portion of the restoration cost.

The Europa was not even in the same league.

BDA, it’s my opinion you can’t use BAT as a pricing reference as a comparison to Barrett Jackson auctions. At BJ auction you get to see the car in person and up close. And.....you get to compare against other cars being sold in same price range. More importantly, most of the cars at BJ are pristine.  Live car auctions have a different action going on. BAT you can take a week to decide and your looking at photos.

In reality, none of it makes much sense. I’ve seen both types of auctions have ridiculous swings of prices. All it takes are two people who want the same car and have big bank accounts. Or only one who gets the deal of a century.

The seller would have been better off at Bring a Trailer. Less fees, less shipping cost, better market place.

and I would add those two people you reference Glen are either ignorant of the other sources for those cars (like this forum, Lotus Talk, or other Lotus only sites) OR are just lazy to explore and research others.  As you say, they have money to burn and go to the hotbeds of glitter/glamour to buy what they have a whim to get without really being informed about what's out there.

I certainly agree about the two types of auctions. I use BaT as a benchmark because I'm not aware of any other place that keeps a history of what the cars went for as well as the information about the car. Is there another place you can get that information?

They are more interested in following rising and falling values but they are very good judges of stock and keep very long records of sales for comparison in their reviews.
