Title: A quick course in RTV silicone sealants and adhesives
Post by: BDA on Sunday,February 12, 2023, 12:37:15 PM
I've spent more time than I wanted to watching Permatex RTV silicone videos and still didn't feel completely sure which product should be used where. Part of the problem is there is a fair degree of overlap but for whatever reason, I found this article very helpful in helping me to understand which product is best for particular applications. I thought it might be useful to some of you too.

Thanks for that article. That perspective on what to use were would have been pretty hard to deduce by reading the packaging of each tube.

But really, you can use RTV on exhaust joints?

I've used the red RTV on my exhaust with no problems. Your exhaust gets hot but not when compared to the temperature resistance of silicone.

I thought the tip to use silicone noodles was interesting. I've used the "smear technique" forever and it seemed to work. I thought it would give me more sealant than I needed but when changing an oil pan gasket recently, I found it it didn't use any more than smearing. Obviously you can't use silicone for the main caps to pan seal but next time, I'll try making the rail gaskets rather than using the cork gaskets as they are so delicate. The uprated pan gaskets sound a lot nicer than the old ones though.
