I don't know.  The Renault engines are quite a bit lighter.  Imagine if they had fit some of the Gordini engines: 1800cc, 180-200hp, not shabby at all.  Mind, at those output levels, they didn't last all that long nor could they be described as tractable.  In the 140 range, though, they do last and are much more tractable than an equivalent TC.  Of course there was also a twin cam, four valve Gordini engine as well.  Or the turbo engine which put out 160 hp when detuned for the street!

Lotus TC engines were absolutely amazing, for their time.  There was nothing else like them available for the price.  They were a bit of a cobbled-up affair though and could have used beefier valve guides for a start.

Especially since i've been on this forum, I've been disabused of notion that the Renault motors were too weak and inappropriate for a sports car. However, the press release implied that Lotus was going to continue the Europa as export only. I didn't know about the four valve Gordini motor at all much less know it was available during Europa production. That would have been a great engine to use but I sort of think an English car should have an English motor and it would be nice to be available in England!  :)

Sorry to rag on the TC engine.  It's an amazing engine considering the development budget.  Ford's further developments (BDAs, etc) were top-notch engines.

Mine has 80,000 miles on its original Renault engine (the earlier 1470 cc). The engine has never been apart, the cylinder head has never been off, and it still has its original water pump. The original Solex carburettor has never been taken off. In more than 47 years driving the Europa has never left me stranded at the roadside. I doubt many TC owners can make similar statements and, over the years, I've been more than thankful to have the French-powered version of our car.
