Title: Brake light switch
Post by: 1970EuropaGuy on Friday,February 22, 2019, 08:13:57 AM
My brake lights have quit working. Does anyone know where the brake light switch is located? I've been looking in the dark garage and haven't located it yet.

Should be in the engine bay right side, usually just on top of the frame.

Note that is has 3/8-24 threads, not 1/8" NPT that is commonly found in parts stores.

On a TC it is between the exhaust manifold and the battery.

Two green wires coming off the top.

Yeah, life is tough! This all came about because I just installed a third brake light so soccer moms texting and putting on makeup have a better chance of seeing me. I was unsure about doing this modification but it might save me some day. I think it looks OK.

It looks great! I've seen where some have done something more fancy but this is a lot less disruptive and looks really good!  :beerchug:

I never feel uneasy when I drive my Lotus but so many people are distracted with their phones, I think that anything we can do to wake them up is a positive step. If I were to die racing in Formula 1 or whatever that would be OK. But I don't want to die from a distracted driver and they are becoming more common every year.

Get a good horn too. If you aren't seen, you better be heard!

Very nice! I like the way it blends in with the stripe!

I am restoring my 71 and thought the same as you about being seen. Where did you source this awsome 3rd light? The other thing I am thinking about is installing a small shark fin on back of roof with a backup camera instead of a rear view mirror to clear the side sails.

70guy, while we wait for the source answer, I think you have a winner there.👍👍🏆🏆
You may see it pop up again.

here's my 3rd middle LED brake light, however I secured mine "UNDER" the rear overhand edge.   It tucked up underneath quite nicely and out of sight, except if you are behind the car.

Sandyman, I picked it up at Princess Auto on Vancouver Island. For the US neighbours, Princess Auto is a little like Harbor Freight except 2 or 3 times more expensive.

I had hoped to put the light under the overhang but it doesn't quite fit. Anyway, I think it looks OK. Does work well with the stripe!

That's a very neat mod, it looks so good it could be original if Lotus had heard of high level brake lights back then.

It fits in so well that I can imagine you going through shelves of lights to find one that fitted the stripe !  :)

That looks great.   How did you run the wiring to the light?

Thanks,
Sherman

Thanks Europaguy, Princess Auto in Owen Sound ON. (close to me.) I will copy if you don't mind.

Very easy.   The under lip air vents provide a void to fish the wires across the top and down the side sails to the brake light switch.   very easy mod.

I drilled a small hole through the fibreglass to run the wires inside. Another small hole in the firewall to pass the wires into the engine compartment. Certainly going through the vents would work as well but with this light it mounted flusher with the drilled hole.

It's very bright, I think a good mod for all of us in today's SUV world.

I installed mine under the roof lip. Bent some sheet metal into a 90 degree angle, secured light to metal, and metal to car with a couple dabs of RTV. Ran the wires as Ted Taylor did. Mine are wired into the turn signals too.
