Brief oil observations
« on: Monday,July 08, 2019, 01:35:18 PM »
I ran the engine in on Penrite Classic Medium a 20/60, carefully-blended, conventional oil with added “zinc”.  Ran well, used virtually no oil, oil temps ran up to 80C (there’s an oil cooler) and hot pressures were 55 psi at speed and 25 psi at very hot, slow idle (800 rpm).

Unfortunately I then did three things: I fit a much larger rad, switched to a 83C thermostat from a 75C, and changed to Mobil 1 15/50.

My oil temp now never gets above 65C, oil pressure is fractional higher but my oil consumption is up to 1 litre per 1500 km.

The rad would be a chilling influence but the thermostat a warming one so it’s a bit hard to say exactly how much of an effect the oil switch had.  I plan on switching back to a 75C thermostat and next trying Redline 20/60.  Will report back on the results.
