Title: Installing a Twin Cam Fan Relay and Override Switch V2
Post by: Grumblebuns on Monday,May 25, 2015, 09:07:07 AM
I modified the schematic to add an in-line fuse to the new power source for the fan motor.

Joji, I don't think I can reply to your pinned article about the override switch but have a question..... In your pictures it appears there is a bracket on your radiator that should prevent the otter switch from popping out? Is this something you or a PO added?

AND nice work and nice article. Thanks.

Mark, I added the bracket when I installed a new Otter switch and saw just how loose the new switch and grommet were in the hole in the radiator. I could pull the switch out with very little force. The bracket is made from aluminum stock bent 90 degrees. I drilled and filed a slot in front to fit over the switch terminal connection. The bracket is held in position just by the pressure of the radiator against the opening in the body. For additional safety, you can bend the other end of the bracket around the radiator side tank. Just make sure that the bracket is tight between the radiator and the opening.

Overall a bit more elegant solution to the standard safety wire wrapped around the switch that I've seen others do.

Joji, Great idea, simple and effective!

I just bought a retainer clip from RD but it will only keep the switch in the grommet but not the grommet in the radiator. Your retainer will do both.

Peter shows and describes the retainer clip I have:

The grommet has an inner and outer lip with the radiator shell holding the grommet in place. When I replaced the Otter switch and grommet, the grommet has to go in first,  then the switch. That's the reason why I lost all of my coolant before I got the switch in place.

I'm suspecting that the grommet will not pop out but the switch will. It looks like the RDE retainer fits between the outer lip of the grommet and the radiator side tank. As long as the grommet is not being pushed out too far, this retainer should work.

Here is a colorized version of the schematic.

Thank you Joji for answering my question before I could ask it.
