Rear axle (hub) nut thread size?
« on: Saturday,March 29, 2014, 09:41:56 PM »
Have been searching around a bit for this but can't find the actual thread details for the S2 Europa rear axle hub nut.

Has anyone got the details as I need to find something locally in the next few days.

I can probably work it out but don't have any imperial thread guides so asking this forum where someone that has probably had to do the same thing previously :)

Thanks to all in advance.

TCs use 3/4-16. I would assume that the S2 would be the same but the stub axles are different parts so they could be.

Thanks to those that replied to me directly including offering original nuts.

My car wasn't fitted with original nuts but had modified nyloc nuts used.

As an alternative thought...
Has anyone tried using self locking 'coneloc' type nuts?

I would think that these could be an option as single use fasteners in this application.
Greater thread length would be in play compared to both nylocs and I think the original parts.

I just found I need to replace both of mine: the threads are in a very poor state. I measure 1-1/2 flat to flat, and my thread gauge shows 16tpi, in a diameter of 3/4".

I think Ray at Dent has them, but I really wanted instant gratification (like delivery tomorrow!), but Amazon is no help, nor is McMaster-Carr. Any other places I should check, or should I just get some from Ray?

Hi Stephen,

The thread is standard 3/4" UNF. I have used cone lock type nuts in the past on the original stub axles without any issues. I will have a couple stashed away somewhere that you are welcome to have. The issue is the spacers for the bearings are soft and collapse, allowing the hub to fret on the stub axle. So no matter what nut you use, there is a chance the system will keep working loose. Your car is well developed so I'd hope the rear end has upgraded spacers.

I finish work today (Wed Dec 21) and will be at my shed all Thursday and some of Friday if you are in the area I can help you out. You should have my mobile - I have yours!

Merry Christmas!

Cheers

Yep, but I'm sure your post will help someone sometime :)

I'll be in touch shortly one way or another, if not I'll see you on the LCV night at your place.
