Comparing Ownership of Esprit to Europa

I am considering adding an 85-87 Turbo Esprit to my stable.  I have looked at a few cars, but I can't seem to get a handle on the real DIY repair/operating overhead.  Both of the examples I looked at were "dealer" or "expert"  maintained and had frightening repair and re-repair bills. 

It is great that the bills were shared.  I think they intended to provide a level of confidence that everything was up to snuff, but the cost per mile is staggering.  In once case it came to $1000 for every 200 miles.  Clutch, transfer case or a turbo issue every year... If this is true, it would cost me more to drive the Esprit then all my other cars combined.

Are they really that expensive to maintain and fragile?

It is the cam belt change that would worry me. Engine out job.

Plus I am not sure how easy access is to all the oily bits.

Access on a Europa is silly simple, and most repair/servicing jobs are relatively cheap.

Google "Esprit timing belt job".  No need to remove the engine.  It's actually a pretty easy, albeit fiddly, job.

If you are going to pay someone to maintain your Esprit, then it is going to be expensive.  If you do the work yourself, it should be on the high end of reasonable.  I have worked on number of them and it's all fairly straight forward but time consuming -- thus the expense to have it done professionally.  The important thing is to buy a good example, and I mean a really good example.  There are a lot of neglected and bodged Esprits out there.  Myself?  I would give the Turbo a miss and get a normally aspirated S2.2.

I do appreciate the insight.  I am probably going to take the plunge as soon as my son takes over ownership of my '88 M5, which we are targeting for summer.  The Esprit can't be any more complicated then rebuilding the BMW twincam 24 valve S38 with a separate head, cam tray and a thousand fasteners....can it?.

In the mean time, I'll get brushed up on Esprit model variants and repair procedures.

Actually the Esprit head is a similar design though perhaps less than 1K fasteners.

If you take the plunge, I'd be interested in hearing your experiences Dean.  I went through a similar feeling and really  wanted an S4 Esprit, even now I look enviously at them.  What killed it for me was the realisation that it wouldn't go into the garage we had at the time and I'm not sure it's a "driveway-maintenance" sort of car.

I would check out the actual cost of spare parts and make my decision there. Whatever the mechanical  task is, if a man has done it then you can to.  Ok, a bit glib and you may have to invest in tooling or do some research but at that point you decide whether it's a specialist job or buy the gear you need. When I looked at an S4 I was happy that I would be able to sort it out myself. (if it would have gone into the garage that is ! )

Drifting off topic to a different car but similar problem, a few years ago I was debating a Porsche Cayman.  In the UK the strong message is that these are dealer cars and cost a bomb to maintain which put me off for a while. In the end I decided it's only money (and half of it is the wife's  ;)  ) so we bought a one owner car.

The bills are staggering, the guy had it serviced at Porsche and was spending a ridiculous amount every year.  IIRC there's one bill for £600 just to UPDATE the sat-nav maps. I think the car cost him £45k and there were bills making it  over £60k for 4 years ownership. (we paid £24k, which was far more than Porsche would give him..... makes you wonder why a dealer maintained car is a good idea ?)

So how's it been ? I have it serviced at a local garage, non-specialist but they do service 4 other Porsches and an Aston, all local owners so they are good and in the UK if you try to sell a Porsche without service history stamps then it's hard work.  Outside of annual servicing, I do it myself. Drive belts (PITA),  discs, pads  so far & using Porsche OEM parts bought through a motor factor & keeping receipts. I'd be surprised if I've spent £1500 over the 3 years we've had it.....

Thanks for all the advice.  I am taking baby steps closer to ownership having made a couple offers on cars. Wife is on board (sort of).  The current contender is an 86 HCi.  I have my finger's crossed... 

Going out to drive the Europa today!
