I need some help here please – the TCS I am rebuilding I, (foolishly), bought in pieces, so those “obvious” things on reassembly are not that “obvious” to me. I have searched the Forum and parts diagrams but cannot find the answer to this detail.
How is the lever mounted to the chassis? Please see photo’s
The lever and “pin” are shown cleaned, (they were seized solid), the mounting in the chassis is tapped 3/8” UNF and the lever boss obviously fits over this. But then I have the “pin” which is some 3” long and is tapped in a blind hole 3/8” UNF 20mm deep at one end and again a blind hole ¼” UNF and 12mm deep at the other.
What am I missing here? Or more to the point – what’s wrong?

Hi Dilkris,
I don't know what that drilled/taped pin is about.
The reaction lever is retained with a simple shoulder bolt & washer.
Here's a pic of the TCS arrangement for a left hand drive car.
Cheers,
Gavin

Thanks Gavin - that seems to make sense. It seems the mystery pin will remain a mistery !!
Out of interest - were did you get the "pictorial" from?
Chris

Sorry - "mystery" :-\

You can find an enormous amount of information here:
http://www.lotus-europa.com/manuals/index.htm
Owners/parts/service manuals, wiring diagrams, technical articles, etc.

It came from a "Body Removal" post referencing Phil Ethier, a long time Europa guy.
Here's the link - might be helpful for other stuff.

Thankyou JB Collier and Gavin - (all I managed to find was the below) :headbanger:

I've been looking at my handbrake too, it seems that when the cable is taut the horseshoe touches the bottom of the coolant pipes, is that normal?
-
Mine is like this! http://www.lotuseuropa.org/LotusForum/index.php?topic=3266.msg33427#msg33427 (http://www.lotuseuropa.org/LotusForum/index.php?topic=3266.msg33427#msg33427)
There is a bit of a discussion about it there too!
-
Interesting, mine run through the rear chassis below the coolant pipes in separate holes, one each side. Nothing in the hole where your cables run
-
My handbrake cables do too, from the two holes linked by a slit. They have to so the handbrake outer cable ferules can seat in the holes.
The two you see with the outer cables are the speedo and choke I believe (as it's from memory!).
I couldn't get the horseshoe to sit above, or below the pipes, though I have not removed and refitted it to try. The consensus seemed to be that its unlikely to wear through the pipes before they rust!

Look in other manuals:

-
Ah right, just read some more of your thread, so mine is correct running below the pipes in theory :-)
-
There's a labeled diagram of S2 rear bulkhead holes, here
http://lotus-europa.com/manuals/s2misc/framebulkhead.jpg
-
One of these mounted above the coolant pipes would make adjustments so much easier.
-
It does get busy in there. To mine I have also added: pressure and return lines for AC, two lines for a front mounted oil cooler and two cables for a cable shifter.
-
Question: How much slop should there be, up & down, on the reaction lever pivot? Mine seems to have more than 1/8". Do you think that could cause any problem? I can't think of any but it doesn't seem right.
-
There's supposed to be a washer/spacer under the pivot but I can't remember how much running clearance that provides . . or how much it's supposed to provide.
Can't see 1/8" up/down slop causing much issue but I've seen reports that the cable end rubs on the fibreglass underneath. I'd just put a washer/spacer in and allow a little clearance.
-
Mine rubs. You can see in the picture I liked to earlier in the post.
-
54/1173 rubs. I put a rub barrier on the coolant tubes.

Hi Silver,
Referring to your earlier post, you said:
I looked at the front linkage for the handbrake and noticed that the lever between the pull and the cable looks bent downwards so the cable to the rear scrapes the fibreglass. Is this typical?
If I recall, the reaction lever is a Ford part (Cortina?) and as far as I know, that downward kink is stock.
The kink is to permit some reasonable alignment of the forward cable end with the horseshoe in the tunnel. Note the forward cable end is a slot shape to fit the reaction lever and has very limited ability to 'wiggle' about and conform to a variation in pull angles.
Viewed in side elevation, the cable traces a diagonal path but the reaction lever only moves horizontally. Make sense?
Yes, noted your cable end rubbing on the fibreglass but frankly, I wouldn't worry much. It's annoying but even if it wears through the fibreglass, I can't see much potential for a problem.
