Being on able to refrain myself I pulled the old oil pan off. Inside I found a strange part. At first I thought it might be part of the motor, but after inspecting the Allen wrench opening, discovered it to be 1/8”, meaning it’s as likely as not to be a tool bit, left there by the PO. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Hi LeftAngle,
I’ve no idea what that is but I bet you’re glad you found it!

That's part of the timing chain tensioner. It's an internal part that holds the tensioning spring in place while you assemble the sprockets and chain. Once everything is in place you turn it using an allen key and release the spring. The "notches" prevent it from retracting too far during start-up until the oil pressure builds up to hold it in place.

You will have to remove the timing cover and see what's up.

Ro-ro.... Thanks. Wish I’d left the firewall out.

First thing I thought was
Must be a magnet left there to
attract metal partical in the oil !!
