Title: 123 distributors
Post by: BDA on Sunday,April 24, 2022, 08:32:36 PM
For those interested in the electronic programmable distributor for their TC motor, this looks like a great place: http://www.spencersmotorsports.com/parts-store

They also have intake manifolds for Stromberg heads……I wonder if they are actually an improvement….

I guess I should have mentioned that too. I have no idea if one Weber is better than two Strombergs but from what I understand, the twin Stromberg setup is very good for street use.

The picture of the Stromberg manifold looks like the carbs are hard-mounted to it. I don't see a gap for the soft mount O-ring. It's a bit hard to tell, though.

If you look really closely, they are using the cushioned mounting hardware (rather than Thackery washers). but on the other hand, there doesn't appear to be any gap between what might be an 0-ring carrier and the manifold or the carb.

On a whim, I thought I'd make a bit of a comparison (I really don't know how fair it is). Assuming 45DCOE, each throat would be 1.77" across but I believe the largest main venturi is 40mm so the real diameter is about 1.57". That's a lot smaller than 1.75" Strombergs but do the Strombergs have the same sort of ramp up to the jet that the SUs have? That would drastically reduce the open area of the carb throat.

It looks like the Stromberg and SU ramps are pretty similar.

Yeah, they both have those ramps up to their jets so my calculation is probably not useful.

A single CD175 will supposedly flow enough to support 250hp on a draw through turbo setup,
so I don’t think a Twin Cam is under carbureted with two of them!

May be very good, but they ARE fiddly to set up and keep going.  I'm thinking (after talking with Barry) of going that route; the dual 45 throats close enough for street use and in reality, you have simplified the whole intake arrangement (not to mention that the weber/delorto arrangement is a lot more tunable).  Still chewing on it...but have other more pressing issues (like leaking front crank seal and potentially oil pan gaskets) right now.

Thinking there are, like everything else, upsides and downsides.  But, I've run webers before and had no issues...and strombergs have given me fits on various cars (like my newer elite, MGBs, and now the TC).

You could fit 2 44 or 48mm Mikuni motorcycle style carbs...someone on here did this and was pleased, there is a kit available.

A bit of work necessary to fit and cable in the mikuni setup; I checked out the site and have been exchanging emails with both them and Barry.  Plus for Barry's is that it gets rid of the choke cable and the webers are a known quantity (and widely understood and tuneable), the plus for the mikunis is they are the same technology and readily adaptable to the existing controls and air trunking.

Toss up?
