Title: Oil Leaks
Post by: 4129R on Sunday,May 03, 2015, 01:05:29 AM
I know Colin Chapman is supposed to have said "If it doesn't burn oil and leak oil, it wouldn't be a Lotus.

I know the origin of the name Lotus is reputed to have come from the Lotus plant, once you have tasted the fruit of one, you will not want any other.

It is also rumoured to come from a car Colin Chapman tried to sell at auction and came back with Lot U/S on it.

I know L O T U S normally stands for "Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious".

Mine seems to stand for "Leaks Oil  Through Usual Sources".

The engine is covered in clean oil on the left side. I must give it a good wipe down with a clean rag to find the source.

Does anyone out there have a Lotus which doesn't burn oil, and leak oil?

Yup.

No problem at all, no oil leaks, never breaks down.

Always starts when I want it to.

Doesn't leak in the rain.  Doesn't burn oil.

I just don't understand what all the fuss is about.......   aren't they all like this ?    ;)

Hello 4129r,
Ive just had my engine rebuilt and I am impressed, no oil leaks, no oil burning but pre the rebuild mine was the same as yours. I did have one major oil leak when I had not fastened the oil filler cap on square. :-[ The other thing was the engine had covered 46k in 42 years so gaskets and seals had passed their best.
all the best
