Hi Forum!
Here is my 1971 S2 Type 65 #1124. It lives with me in Nashville, Tennessee

:Welcome: Music!
Nice S2 you got there! Is there a story behind it? I know we'd all like to see more pictures of it!

Hello MCL, and :Welcome:
Saw your FB post introducing Kermit and almost doubled over laughing. Perfect name for a green Europa!
This forum is a great resource. Everyone is friendly and there are some super knowledgeable folks here who have helped me a lot. Way more in depth and technical than the Facebook site.
Do I see a little front end damage on Kermit? There are a few fiberglass wizards here who will surely off advice.
Cheers,
Tom (aka Surfguitar58)

Yeah, my daughter (4yo) loves the name, too :)) Seemed a no brainer with that color hahaha
A deer ran into it, causing the damage. I try to get to it, for 8 years now... But this year, I will finally fix it. Car needs a resto bad, but I just can't stop driving it! I know how to do it, just no time yet. Parallel to that, I am building a 1700 wedge turbo engine for Kermit. The long block is almost done, in the process of setting the liner height. Should be a fun engine, shooting for about 160hp.
I work at www.lanemotormuseum.com as a restoration tech. The museum has several Lotus, and about 500 other vehicles. So I stay busy, with little time for my own cars and bikes.

I bought it 8 or 10 years ago here in town. Don't know much about the history, only that it came with a full Hermes Kit and a vinyl top from the dealer. The Hermes Kit is still on it, the vinyl top is gone.
-
A vinyl top like in the '70s!? I've seen a lot of strange things done to Europas but never that!
You've got a very cool job! You should have no trouble restoring your car. As I told a guy who recently bought a hacked up Europa and was offered a trade for what looked like a nice bug eye Sprite, driving a properly running Europa is the most fun most people can afford so I understand your reticence in taking it off the road. When you finally do, I hope you'll keep us up to date on your progress!
Go Kermit!

The turbo wedge sounds like a great option for the Europa, send some pics of your progress.
Is that a 308 GT4 in the background? One of yours, or part of the museum?
Tom

I'd love to hear some details of your turbo wedge build.

Is that a 308 GT4 in the background?
It looks like a Lambo Urraco to me, though I could be wrong.
-
Welcome to the forum, MCL. Nice Europa, should be a flyer with 160 horses onboard. I like seeing Europas in the more unusual colours. Is this the original colour for yours? Cheers :beerchug:

Give that man a cigar.
-
It is indeed a 1976 Lambo Urraco. It belongs to the museum. I built the engine for it a few years back after it dropped a valve.
Pics of the wedge build will follow.
The Pistachio Lime Green is the original color. The car is numbers matching, too.

:Welcome:
I love the bright colours that many Europas were painted. An added bonus, they are visible.
-
In a driving world today where 90% of all vehicles seem to be a some shade between white and white (and the occasional maroon LOL), it truly brings a smile to my face to be reminded of when the automotive world was filled with so many colors. Welcome my friend to the forum!!! :beerchug:
-
Yeah, I kinda have a thing for bright green...
That is one of my 2 wheel toys, Rickman CR900 turbo

I seem to remember many years ago - I think it might have been when I was in high school - which means it was an age ago! - that Mercedes did a study of what color is the most visible under all weather and light conditions and I thought the results were that white was the most visible. Obviously, that wouldn't hold true during snow!
That was certainly a long time ago and I could easily be wrong (as readers here surely know!) but I don't think it's a question that bright colors like yellow, orange and lime green would also be VERY visible colors and red under most conditions.
Incidentally, I've always had a thing for white cars and my first Europa was white so I had to go with white almost regardless of how easily it could be seen.
-
Welcome to the forum. Lovely car!
It would be hard to ignore pistachio green or Colorado orange! Mine’s going back to Lotus Yellow like Certified’s amazing car. I wonder if Mercedes had a surplus of White paint before the study.
Regards,

Of all the driving conditions, I would like to be seen in fog.
Imagine being caught in fog on a main road, and a large truck coming up from behind and he hasn't seen your lovely white Europa.
I think I won't drive in fog now, after that thought.
-
Fit a "rain light".
-
Yeah, fog would probably be a real problem for me (snow too, but then I am very unlikely to drive in the snow) but not so much for a yellow or red car. It could be that the probability of the weather conditions was factored in, that their tests were poorly constructed, or that I misremembered.
So I did a search for "most visible car color" (maybe I should have done that before opening my yap about something I thought I remembered - or misremembered - fifty years ago!) and there appears differences of opinion. This article says bright yellow or blue is the most visible: https://www.cartoq.com/which-car-colours-are-safest-for-you/
Then a little further down this article says that white is: https://www.carsdirect.com/car-safety/what-is-the-safest-car-color-for-avoiding-accidents
There are lots more and there is a bit of variability but it seem that bright colors and white are generally at the top.
If white is the best, I'm happy but my car is white more because I like it than anything else.

Regards,
I was driving on the I5 to Portland a few months ago in the rain and mist and a bright green Ford Focus or something went past me. One of the few modern cars that was really visible at the time. Bright colours rule.
I've always wanted a JPS Europa but after purchasing my yellow one I wouldn't go back.
