Front number plate placement
« on: Saturday,May 20, 2017, 07:36:27 AM »
Hi all,

Living in Ontario Canada we have to place a number plate on the front of the car... Ugh :-(

Can anyone give guidance on how to attache a front number plate?

Many thanks,

I made up L shaped brackets and attached it to the fibreglass just below the grill.

Brackets on the number plate first, then drill the holes in the fibreglass so the plate is central.

Bracket off the bumper mounting bolts on one side or the other.  DO NOT have it in front of the grill!

With the spare tire already taking up a lot of the grill inlet area, not sure that I would want a plate obstructing more air flow. 2501 has the plate bolted to the body off to the side. It doesn't look to bad there.

Speaking of Ontario, this chap had a decal made of his front plate:

Very interesting, though I am surprised it is legal. Is it a DOT decal or something self made?

I am very fortunate that front plates are no longer required in Nova Scotia. Though even when they were I refused to clutter the front of my 69 Mustang with a plate. I got away with it for years until one evening when I was stopped by a member of the local constabulary because he was sure that a young guy in a red Mach 1 must be up to no good. Unable to find any other faults, he was visibly glad to discover the absence of the front plate. Suitably fined, I searched for and eventually found a correct front plate bracket, sandblasted it, painted, fitted it, then two weeks later the requirement for the plate was rescinded. ... and yet that bracket is still on the Mustang decades later.
The Twin Cam plays the symphony whilst my right foot conducts the orchestra. At 3800 rpm the Mad Pipe Organ joins in.

FYI this is my front number plate on the grill from new as far as I'm aware.
I live in England where this is legal, may not be where you are?
Cheers

I really wondered how legal that is, does it go through MOT's okay with it?  I just remade my front plate by 3D printing the black letters, making up an aluminium plate and using reflective white tape as the backing.  It would be dead easy for me to print the letters again in white...

I know the size of the letters are important and white letters on black background is legal up to when they introduced the yellow background (sorry can't remember when that was).
It was accepted in its MOT in 2002 which was when the car was in one piece  :))

Just found this in Wikipedia
"Older British plates had white, grey or silver characters on a black background. This style of plate was phased out in 1972 and, until 2012, legal to be carried only on vehicles first registered before 1 January 1973. A vehicle which was first registered on or after 1 January 1973 shall be treated as if it was first registered before that date if it was constructed before 1 January 1973.[6] However, the Finance Bill 2014 and subsequent Finance Acts extended the Historic Vehicle class cut-off year from 1973 to 1974 and subsequently, a rolling forty years. This had the effect of linking eligibility to display old-style plates with 'Tax Exempt' vehicle status. It follows that the older style plates are now available for any vehicle constructed 40 or more years ago, provided that an application has been made to the DVLA to have the vehicle included in the historic vehicle class; it is so registered and is nil-rated for Vehicle Excise Duty."

Thanks for that.  I've got early pictures of mine with the grill letters but then it gained a white backed plate back around then.  Even though the grill area is dark it sounded like classing fresh air as a black background was stretching it!  I do prefer the look though.  Thanks for the informative reply.
