For $1K, sounds like a deal. What's going on with the rear of the chassis?

Interesting,  it looks like a very early lotus formula ford gave up is engine,  gearbox and rear suspension for this car.   The gearbox is Renault but has rotoflex joints and a Ford motor bold up to it.
