Title: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: Mike Mileski on Monday,May 20, 2013, 10:02:51 AM
It looks like Chip Foose and company are going to do their magic on a 1972 Europa next Sunday night, May 26, on Overhaulin'. Check your local listings for the time. In Tucson, it's at 8:00 p.m.

This is the event our group was invited to back in November. Was asked not to reveal the real reason for the gathering

So, for the benefit of us on the other side of the pond, what is this all about folks ?  Is it a TV show aired just in the US or on an internet feed that we might see over here ?

It is a show that secretly restores someone car. Usually they stage something like the car gets stolen, but in fact the "Overhaulin" show has the car and does a restoration, then surprises the owner after it's completed.

In this case it is a Twin Cam Special that a guy gave away to his friend. His friend was going to restore the car as a project for he and his son. However, "Overhaulin" redid the car and gave it back to the original owner.

I don't know if you can get the program in the UK. However I sure it will be posted on the "Overhaulin" site at some point. The show is also available on Nextflix.

Right, I get it. We've had similar shows over here but they are usually re-vamping someone's house and not their car.  Actually, judging on some of the house make-overs I don't think I'd let the producers anywhere near something as important as my car......

I'll take a tour of google on Monday morning, I'm sure I'll find it somewhere  ;)

And yes we get overhauling in the UK. Usually on sky discovery turbo.  I will certainly keep my eye out.  It makes an alternative to wheeler dealers.  ;D

Well I do really   Its only Brewer's sick jokes that make me cringe

The worst one of the lost must be classic car rescue in the UK! I can't stand the bloke, well how he comes across and the work they do looks really bodged.

both ep1 and 2 air tonight.  looking forward to watching it.  ive heard a few things, some neat, others.... not.

either way, good for the brand, and our cars.

i was at a high end used car dealer Friday(im trying to find an 04' XJR)  and some how the europa came up.  the owner says to me  thats a collectable, any interest in selling?  i said, No, not selling and not much of a collectable yet.  he said it will be!

hahaha  we can dream.

A recent, or not so recent episode of Top Gear, or 5th Gear (so hard to keep track of those UK programs) had one of those "5 best investments" installments where one of the cars was a Triumph Spitfire.  I loved the two I owned and have many fond memories of working on them (they were, after all, British).  This surprised me, since the Spitfire always seemed to be the poor younger brother of the TR model.  Now, maybe, finally, with the help of Chip Foose and Jay Leno, maybe, just maybe, the Europa will begin to catch up to the Elan in popularity.

That's the good news.  The bad news may be, until replacement parts become more available (like Spitfire parts are available), they may become more expensive and difficult to find and there were a lot more Triumphs made than Lotus Europi, so it may not be feasible for manufacturers to tool up for them.  The good news is, if all what I just wrote is true, your Lotus Europa will become much more valuable in the future, so keep it in good order, and prepare yourself for the questions at stop lights.  :trophy:

a few years ago i was offered a sunbeam tiger for free.  all i had to do was title it.  it ran, but needed work.  title was lost.

i passed on it.

a few weeks ago i heard one sold at an auction for 6 figures.   :headbanger:

It all depends on rarity.  The number of Europas that were produced is a difficult number to get down, since the records for the Type 47 are, well, vague.  At most, there were less than 85 of those produced, but even using that generous figure, plus adding 2 ultra rare Type 62s, there were only 8,908 Europas ever made.  That's fewer cars than Ford produces in a DAY.

This time, hang on to your car.  You may get lucky.  At the least, you'll be in good rare company

It all depends on rarity.
It half depends on rarity.  There has to be demand as well as supply.... or high demand and low supply.
Title: Re: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: LeftAngle on Thursday,June 06, 2013, 11:18:55 AM
We already know that there's low supply... Jay Leno has done a pretty good job of increasing the demand (Chip Foose as well).

In the U.S., I think low supply has caused some of the low demand when it comes to the Europa.  With the exception of mine, I've virtually seen no Europas on the road in the past 20 years.   I don't go to events where they may be gathering, but neither does the general public.  Overhaulin has put the Europa in front of the average car afficionato and possibly on the map.  Time will tell, but if more are fixed up and put on the road, then they may get more press, and that leads to demand.

What ya think?

I think in the big picture the show will add little interest to the Europa. The cars production was just to small. For what ever reason it just does not enjoy "Exotic" status in terms of increasing the value over time. With the exception of a rare sale the cars go fairly cheap. But, I also think we are our own worse enemies. Many times when a car comes up for sale, we as owners usually bash the car for being over priced. I see the same thing over on the Porsche 914 forum. The Europa is much like another car I owned; a Citroen SM. One of the most exotic cars built, but still is very reasonably priced, even today.

I'm hoping someday they will sky rocket in price, at least I will come somewhat close to recovering the money I've spent on mine. But then again I really like my car a probably would never sell it; but maybe my heirs will

Post by: LeftAngle on Friday,June 07, 2013, 07:56:13 AM
Joe; if any other car on the planet could be compared to the look of the Europa, the CM would probably head the list.  I think looks drive the desire machine, and that may be what's holding the Europa back.  OK, maybe light (mis-interpreted as "cheap") construction too, something the Citroen didn't have to deal with.

As you, I hope the image and value improves, but only my heirs would benefit.  I've already been informed by one of my nephew's wife, not to will it to him.

Thanks for posting Joe. Whether you agree or not with the mods you can't argue they look well executed with quality workmanship, the paintwork looks great. For me the wheels look too big against the body, but each to their own...

The wheels seem to much on the red car.........

Both cars look great.  Did they do anything engine wise, brake etc. ?  I normally don't watch car shows........I have a garage full of show........and no go.
Thank you Joe for the pictures.

Thanks for posting, Joe. Been kinda curious about what all the talk has been about. I can't say that I am enthusiastic about many of the changes made, but over time it would probably grow on me. Some changes look great (love the tail lights). Actually, it looks like a cool car without looking like a Europa. I dare say, though, that the delicate Europa handling has not been considered in the name of customising.

Note to friends and relatives; DO NOT contact Chip Foose to overhaul my Europa. Just saying...

Welcome to the forum Mr hackmechanic (Rob?). I read your blog. Very interesting, and I'm going to stop into Chapters this week and look for a copy of your book. I'm doing some writing of my own (purely novis stuff) and I like your writing style and of course subject matter.

Oh, and pull the trigger and get that Europa. Perhaps this forum will inspire you to do just that. I have been a fan of the Europa since I was a kid but knew nothing of ownership until I became serious about getting one. And that didn't happen until I realised that ownership was both possible and practical for an enthusiast of my modest means. It's one of the best things I've ever done. In fact, most of my writing is about Europa ownership.
Cheers :beerchug:

Well, I finally caught up with both episodes last night, watched them back to back (my wife was out with the local Women's Institute, so it was just me and the dog.....   we get to use the TV remote, and the dog can sit wherever he feels comfortable   ;)  )

So, what about it ?  Well, I'm not a purist where cars are concerned although I do tend to keep them similar to what they came out of the factory;  my days of frenched-in lights and side exhausts are long gone.  I do like mods that improve or update mechanics, just because Lotus did things one way doesn't mean it's the only solution, but I tend not to get so excited about bodywork mods.

I'm split between "cool, looks neat" and "uhhh ?".  For example the headlights looked good and no doubt a modern version would have them. The new dash looked good and the retrimming excellent. (although I'm puzzled how they managed to add 2" width to the seats, I thought they were pretty much sized to fit as it was ? ) The CV joints in the drivetrain,  the suspension looked well engineered and I like stuff like that, although you'd need to drive it to see how the mods worked in real life.

"Uhh" moments were when they decided to stiffen the floor for example. uhh ?  When Lotus designed the TC version the first thing they did was to try and increase cabin space from the S2, so these guys take an S2 Europa and shove a load of board and fibreglass on the floor and firewall to reduce space ?  And the "essential"  engine bay inlets behind the doors ?  I thought the engine bay air flow relied on the low pressure area over the rear deck dragging air up from beneath the car to cool the whole volume, surely adding a high level inlet will reduce that effect, the air will go in at high level and straight out of the lid vents ?   Perhaps I'm getting it wrong and the inlet, together with the door/roofline mods are under the "show" rather than "go" banner, which means - "hmm, ok,  if that's what you want".

But overall, yep, I liked the enthusiasm of the program, the quality of the work they were doing and the overall result. When you stand back the car definitely says "Europa" and it's only when you look closer that you see the numerous modifications they've made. A bit like some of the Bank's Europas that I've seen over here, a sort of "Europa for the 21st Century" which is what I think they were aiming for.

The problem I have with people such as Foose and company messing with cars like this is the lack of proper engineering involved. Their formula works very well for American cars (or any car for that matter) that spends its drive time cruising Main St. A car like the Europa, built with very little reserve factor and engineered as a delicately balanced driving machine, is significantly effected by any modification. Without careful consideration of how any mod would effect the driving dynamics of the machine, one would have to assume that effect will be negative.

Now, I must admit that I haven't seen these episodes, but I have watched the show many times. Foose and crew do great work, but they are car customisers, not engineers. Their primary concern is with a vehicles asthetics. Ad hoc changes to suspensions, drivetrain, areodynamics, etc can't be expected to be actual improvements just because they look cool... unless of course, looking cool is the primary goal.

Anyway, it's interesting to see the Europa getting this kind of exposure.

I'd really like to hear a review from the owner when the car is back on the road.

I think that would be the acid test Mark. I don't actually recall it being driven under it's own power at any point, it was always being pushed around in the shots which did surprise me given the amount of time they put into the car.

I think some of the mods were forced onto them; they picked a Porsche gearbox and presumably that dictated the driveshafts and need for rear suspension design because presumably they could no longer use the driveshart as an upper link which loads into the gearbox ?  And towards the end when they lifted the body and started cutting the front of the chassis to change the front suspension, that looked another "doh" modification that suddenly appeared - wheelarch clearance maybe ?

But overall their work looked sensible if you were into changing the fundamental design so much. A rear disc conversion, rose jointed fully adjustable suspension and very chunky rear hub carriers look the sort of things you'd need if you changed the complete drivetrain and boosted the power from 125bhp to the 300bhp they claimed.  It's not the sort of thing I'd do to my own car, but interesting to watch.

A bit late on this thread, but a few comments FWIW.

Personally, I never cared for the premise of Overhaulin' where the work is rushed to meet a contrived schedule deadline.  When you rush things, the results are usually not optimum.  I would extend Mark's earlier comment and like to ask what the owner thinks 6 months or a year from now when the true quality of the product is evident.  Although the car photographs well, it might not appear so good to a person with a critical eye at 2-3 feet.

(Although not applicable to a fiberglass Lotus, I've seen several shows in the past where they just slathered gobs of body filler on metal and sanded down to get the desired contour instead of working the metal itself and using a minimum of filler; this is not quality work IMHO.)

As for the mods, I tend to agree with other posters that the mechanical upgrades are generally interesting and appealing, but I do wonder how well integrated these mods are.  I would think some track-based suspension tuning and brake balancing would be required before you hand this beast off to someone (if they did this, I missed it).  Also, some of the body work is not to my taste and I believe the wheels are definitely lacking in proportion.

Lastly, I don't think one should get too hung up on the potential future value of these cars.  It's a very rare event when a classic car can be restored and the owner is not underwater (lost money) when the job is complete.  Just put in the money you can afford and enjoy the result.    ;D

 Rick

Gentlemen and any Ladies Present,
Mysmallwheels here, probably Cousin Jonathan to many of you. As I'm "new in town", short bio; born in Texas, Raised in New Orleans, live in Dallas Texas. Some background as line mechanic for Fiat/Alfa/Lotus(Elan&Europa)/Jensen(includes JH w/440 mopar).
I do not know Chip or his father Sam, but of all the problems such a car might have, quality materials and construction are a given. Sam did customs and stunt cars in the 50's &60's: the studios beat hell out of them and bought more. Chris grew up in that shop, and about 16-17 completed a car(with his dad's help) called the Alien; 1940 Ford Panel Sedan, every line and panel cut and subtly reshaped; although not a roadster, it took all(Best Paint, Best Engine, Best Engineered) but Most Beautiful Roadster.
I think you are missing the 18-25 pairs of working hands, guided by a true master of the art, a man only in his 40's, who is well known and liked in his business. Some of the uncredited people in the background are worth checking out.
I too though would like to here fro owner: when an I drive it, please, please pretty please. msw ,AKA Chris

Hope to here feedback once you drive it, that's the most important thing... How does it drive!?

Where did all the wiring in the engine bay go?  It looks pristine.  Mine looks like a rat's nest (albiet, a neat one).  How and where can I run it to look more like yours than something from the Munsters?

Well it took Yahoo to screw up the Europa Groups web site bad enough that I found you guys over here.  I new there would be a silver lining to Yahoo's blunder.   Good to see that John is online.  The funny thing is that completely coincidental to jumping over here, I called over to Jay's guys yesterday to see if how the Europa was coming along.

John - I had no idea that the car was in limbo.  Please don't be shy about organizing a sorting party.  Happy to swing by once you get your hands on it.

Dean (S2/Zetec - Blue/white)

PS: If you still have the Revolution wheels, I would be interested in purchasing them.  You can email me directly at healeybn7@yahoo.com.

Wiring all runs in the center frame tube and down the sides where it splits at the engine

Dang, I would have kept the original engine, it looked great! Where is it now is the real question, looks like it has the Hermes Kit but can't tell for sure. Very nice, of course the 2zz is spectacular but I like originality. However the craftsmanship on the suspension design, engine and chassis really make your car a work of art!

Hope to see it in person one day.

They should make a TV show where a group of talented mechanics/fabricators show up at the overhaulin shop and "steal" cars that have been sitting there for months on end and completely restore them again before the owners get a chance to drive them. The show would be narrated by Nicholas Cage and directed by Michael Bay. It will be called Exploverhaulin!

Great news John, I'm very pleased to hear you're almost there. If it's any consolation I had a good friend who was in the Lotus restoration business and his cars used to take ages to get finished. People often complained and his stock reply was "do you want it quick, or do you want it right ?"

His work was show winning stuff, and from the photos you've posted, so is yours. Better to be late than botched, the car will be worth the wait.

How do you think an XJS will do?  Sure, there were more then 100 thousand of them made.  They are pretty.  And with emissions going the way they are, think V12's be a thing of the past.

I am betting as i did on the  europa, that their values will not go down anymore.  $2k for a running #2 1/2 convertible example  is pretty good.  New carpets, seat covers and top is all it needs to be a #2

John, I am stoked that you got your S2 back- Chip only seems to steal cars for the TV biz. I have
been watching, and many other than here were passing out some pretty harsh pre-judgement,
and didn't do much homework on their target; one of his early cars that "put him on the map" as
something other than Sam Foose's son (I'd be proud of that myself!) was his early car "Hemisphear"
Which has a fully independent suspension he designed 20 odd years ago. I was pretty sure he
didn't misunderstand Colin Chapman's intent- and you got to drive it!  >:D mysmallwheels

I know it's been a long development and I also know it's a huge honor to have Jay and Foose's crew take care of the design, etc.! It just doesn't get any better than that! I can't wait to hear it's on the road!  :beerchug:

Did they really deliver a half ready (and half construction area) car and you had to finish the job on your own? And that more than one year after the show with the "ready" car was broadcasted?

If yes, shame on Overhaulin' and shame on Foose :deadhorse:

But you car is a stunner now and completely unique. :pirate:

I know what you mean, Mecky, but when somebody takes your car and secretly spends tens of thousands of dollars on it for you, you don't complain!  ;D

In case you didn't see the show, it's on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AGknF9L-O8

(I have to say that they kept calling it a '72 Europa but it is really an S2)

Nice swirl pot! I just got one too (see members cars) and then the hoses looked old so got some silicone ones,
then the hose clips looked old, so I got some new ones...

Although I saw the your Europa episode of Overhaulin on youtube,
it seems to now be on TV here in the UK, so hope to see it soon 'properly'. I keep hoping someone might take
my Europa secretly and restore it, but when I look in the garage- nope, still there!

Yes John, how does a "show" car transfer to "go" duties ?

From the two programs there looked to be a lot of engineering in the conversion, I for one would be interested to know how that pans out on the road. I'm imagine now you've got the engine settled it's like driving a rocket !

I was set to have a friend drive my car who is smaller than Jay.  He got about as far a getting in the seat, when his legs fouled the wheel and he gave up.  I'll be anxiously waiting for the scene where Jay takes it around the block:)

Oops! My mistake. I thought I had seen a Europa in the background on one of his shows...

How tall is Jay? Do you find that your height or width is the more critical dimension?
Title: Re: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: 7upJohn on Friday,February 20, 2015, 07:50:14 PM
Jays is right around 6 feet
Width is not a problem plenty of room there, height is the issue I'm 5'9" and my head is nearly bumping the ceiling and my legs are bent and almost hitting the steering wheel
I am looking for a racing seat that will give me more room
Title: Re: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: BDA on Friday,February 20, 2015, 08:12:34 PM
That's interesting. Assuming that my TC and your S2 originally had similar seating space, it sounds like the modifications to your car reduced the seating space. I'm 6'2" and when I was in college, I fit pretty well in my car. I always had plenty of leg room. My hair would brush the headliner but I never felt really cramped. I could also push start the car by myself which, of course, required me to jump in the car while it is rolling. Now that I'm older, I'm glad I put a bubble in the roof and there is no way I could jump in my car now! No doubt I'm not nearly as flexible as I used to be!

It does sound like Jay will have fold himself to get in your car. Another reason not to miss the video!  ;D
Title: Re: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: jbcollier on Friday,February 20, 2015, 10:05:19 PM
It also depends on where on your body those extra inches are located inches.  I am blessed/cursed with short, relatively speaking of course, legs and a long back.  Not the best combo for an S1.  I fit just fine as long as the seat cushions are removed.  I'll have to have new ones made up to be quite a bit thinner,

Remember they made the floor quite a bit thicker and changed the dash which lowered the steering wheel a bit

I was a bit surprised the put all that extra thickness in the floor. I can see how it might be a bit more cramped. IIRC, they expected to get a bit more leg room when they used the drop down pedals. Did that not work as well as they hoped?
Title: Re: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: 7upJohn on Tuesday,February 24, 2015, 09:39:13 PM
The drop pedals actually seems to have made less room
Title: Re: Europa on Overhaulin'
Post by: EuropaTC on Tuesday,February 24, 2015, 11:09:03 PM
I also scratched my head when they thickened up the floor because the S2 had less interior space than the TC IIRC and then they go and reduce it !   However they could easily get it back with thinner seat bases and seat frames, so it's swings and roundabouts I suppose.

I once read that Colin Chapman designed cars to fit him and the same article said he was 5'8". I don't know if that's true or not, but I'm 5'8" and the 60s Lotus's are a perfect fit for me  :)

I read through this whole thread today.  This was such a fantastic looking project, though I am surprised how many loose ends they left you with!  But I guess the work done here is not nearly as straight forward as many of the muscle cars and hot rods they do.

I didn't see a good answer to how it handles.  I realize the huge power difference will make the car faster but is the handling as you remember it before the swap?  What sort of rear suspension set up did they end up using?
Cheers,
R

I have not had the car out anywhere yet where I could put the handling to the test
Front suspension is modified original Europa suspension
Rear is total custom that Chip designed and built

Well, sometimes we get overshadowed by shiny objects and your car is definitely a shiny object!

Maybe if you incorporated a picture of you and Chip on your sign!

Broken alternator bracket keeping me from racing about
Like everything else on the car it's custom so I have to make one from scratch

Bummer! That is a problem with a totally custom car. Did give you a list of the source for the non-custom parts (we know the big ones like the Boxster tranny and Elise motor) That would be really handy.

No list but I am connected with most of the folks that worked on the car so info is pretty easy to come by

You just wouldn't expect there to be so much stress on an alternator bracket! That certainly looks stout enough!

Yep and seen similar in the UK, usually not a real car as such, a moulded shell with real trim bits. Hence the black glass as nothing inside (usually).
Even F1 teams have show cars which made just for show too (not normally cut in half)

Here's the view from the other side......

(this one is ex BL motor show exhibit I think, to show how you could fit a family of 4 plus luggage in the original mini.....  people were obviously smaller in the olden days !

Very neat cutting there !

Does your new job mean the Europa will be "getting wings" ?     :)

(the Red Bull adverts over here say "Red Bull gives you wings" in case that didn't make sense)

This is not an exotic car.  Sure it looks like a million dollars, but with an 87 HP engine on the S2, it ain't exotic class.  If they had built it as a 300HP monster, like an Alpine or a Cobra, it might have gotten there, but as it is, it falls in the cute and fun category at best.

The Foos rebuild could have been truly exotic, if that were the production version.

I liked all the custom work done to John’s Europa. AND, I really liked the complete story or reality of what it took to finish the car that made it able to driven on the street. Appreciate all the insights John. Nice !

Yeah, I reckon once you get used to the changes, it looks really good.
The best mod IMHO is the "rounding off" treatment just aft of the side windows.

Hi John,  I loved the build on overhauling and this video is better.  I got to see more details. The interior upgrades and that phenomenal supercharged engine. I’m also glad you’re enjoying it.
